New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper signs 'renegotiated' contract, league source confirms

Full Story – Nola.Com

New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper was a late arrival at Thursday's Organized Team Activity session, and we might know why now. According to NFL.com's transaction page, Harper signed a renegotiated contract Thursday. A league source has also confirmed Harper has signed a renegotiated deal.

Harper was set to make $5.25 million in base salary this season while holding a $7.1 million cap number. Already $2.6 million of Harper's base salary is guaranteed this season as the contract stipulation was triggered on the third day of the league year in March. Before the restructured deal, Harper was slated to make a $6 million base in 2014 with a $7.9 million cap figure next season.

Any contract alterations for Harper would probably be more helpful for the 2014 season as any major spending in free agency and with their draft picks is long over. The Saints will carry nearly the league's highest cap cost with $145.5 million committed for 2014.

Opening Statement: This is our third OTA this week in the first week of them. We are still in kind of a lifting and meeting mode also, so these guys are splitting up, half going into the weight room, half going into meetings and we switch that around.

What is the status of Charles Brown?
We’re working through a little offseason injury from weightlifting, nothing significant. We’ll keep monitoring it. He received some work in the walkthroughs. We’re just being patient with it.

How much this week is guys adjusting as opposed to you guys evaluating, especially on defense?

How is it working with Sean Payton on the field?
It’s awesome. I got lucky. I came out here and I’m fortunate enough to be with a great program like the Saints led by Sean Payton. I haven’t felt this way since I was in New England with Bill Belichick, so I’m working for the best and hope to be a small part of our success.

Can you explain to me about how you haven’t felt this way since you were with Bill Belichick?
I just feel like (there is) a sense of urgency. I can’t wait to give everything I have to this organization. I know everybody is on the same path. The big sign that used to be up there saying ‘Do Your Job,’ I have heard those words before, and I plan on doing it. I have two Super Bowl rings, won one of them out of here in sweet live New Orleans. This is a great organization, and that’s where I want to be.

The Saints drafted Romeus in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the club has waived DE Greg Romeus.

Romeus, 6-5, 267, was originally selected by the Saints as a seventh round draft pick (226th overall) in 2011 from Pittsburgh, where he was a four-year letterman. Romeus played in 40 games with 28 starts for the Panthers and finished his college career with 142 tackles, 19.5 sacks, 38.5 stops for losses, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one interception, 12 passes defensed and four blocked kicks. He did not see any action in his first two NFL seasons, recovering from a pair of knee injuries.

The Saints roster now stands at 89 players.

A return to normalcy has been the theme for the New Orleans Saints this offseason. No lockout. No Bountygate. No major contract imbroglios.

It's finally just about football. For the first time in a long time, no lingering distractions or off-field worries.

But it's not that way for every Saint. A handful of players and coaches have understandably divided loyalties this week, despite the start of organized team activities and their inherent ramped-up intensity.

Rob Ryan figures his firing in Dallas only will help him relate to a New Orleans Saints defense humbled by a historically bad season.

"I don't like getting fired," Ryan said Thursday during his first meeting with reporters since coach Sean Payton hired him in February to revamp New Orleans' last-ranked defense. "I know I got my feelings hurt and so did our players. We're looking to do something about it."

The Saints gave up 7,042 yards in 2012, the most in a single season in the NFL. Payton has said that performance forced him to make a change at defensive coordinator, even though he felt bad letting Steve Spagnuolo go after only one highly unusual season. Spagnuolo never coached with Payton, who was suspended all of last season in connection with the NFL's bounty probe of the Saints.

The New Orleans Saints wrapped up the first week of organized team activities Thursday with Coach Sean Payton calling the shots again and Drew Brees completing passes, all the while the rest of the team moved around with few - if any - distractions.

Unlike in recent offseasons when the Saints were dealing with a bounty scandal and Brees' contract situation or a labor stalemate or a Super Bowl hangover, all seemed right with the Saints.

With the media in attendance for the OTA, the Saints moved about their drills and executed their plays like it was all too familiar to them.

News Orleans Saints offensive tackle Charles Brown is starting the 2013 season much like he finished 2012. Brown was held out of practice Thursday, instead doing drills on the sideline with trainers.

Jason Smith started in his place during Thursday's practice.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan says he got 'lucky' to land with New Orleans Saints

Full Story – Nola.Com

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan admitted that he "got my feelings hurt" when he was fired by the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason. But he obviously feels like he landed on his feet, saying he hasn't felt this good since he worked under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots early in his career.

"It's awesome. I got lucky," Ryan said in his first interview session with the New Orleans media Thursday. "I'm fortunate enough to be with a great program like the Saints, led by Sean Payton. I haven't felt this way since I was in New England with Bill Belichick. So I'm working for the best and I hope to be a small part of our success."

Ryan's media session was brief following Thursday's OTA practice. So he didn't get too deep into many subjects. But he did touch on his ouster in Dallas, saying it helps him have the same kind of chip on his shoulder that the Saints defensive players and coaches have after their historically bad season in 2012.
