I saw that video yesterday, and thought it interesting. Reminds me of whoever posted the video of the guy's apartment in Japan, where it was very small but all the walls could move to create the space you needed at the time. Very efficient.
There is a growing "small house" movement. People creating very efficient house designs that incorporate a lot of built-in storage and convertible spaces. Adorable little house plans you can find all over the internet. I do think they cater more to the single or childless couple consumers, like people whose kids are out of the house and they want to cut down on their junk and live simply and economically. It's probably a bit extreme for most people, but it makes you think about how much crap you actually need. Probably most of us, if we really got down to it, could fit all of our most precious belongings into our cars with room to spare. I mean the stuff that really counts to you.
