Because you will miss out on lots of clarity and detail. I thought I had a good HTiB at first until I upgraded. Watched some of my favorite movies again and I was like hold up wait a second. What the heck was that!?! I had been missing out on numerous sounds and details! It was like I was watching a new movie.
And a subwoofer is a must. My best advice is to really make a max budget and start a thread at the AVS Forum in the speaker section. Have your room dimensions as well calculated. It's quite a possibility that a HTiB will not work well in your room. A subwoofer is a must as well.
And put your foot down with the wife. She is most likely decorating the rest of the house. You should get the say so on what electronics you are getting!
