I have Linux at home, but I still carry several (Windoze-based) portable apps on my thumbdrive. At work, I have a Windows PC. On that system, I have a second harddrive. Because installing extra apps always writes everything to the registry and, over time, slows down the system, I installed portable apps on the extra drive. I still set up menu items and made some of the apps the default for certain file types, but it's still extremely fast. I have very few items "installed", aside from what comes with XP. I'm very pleased with the setup and the performance.
I have used Portableapps before and it's a great, but I prefer geek.menu.
