From 12-6-1987, this game provides a couple of firsts. Saints clinch first playoff berth in franchise history. It's also the first NFL start for Vinny Testaverde for the Bucs.

Halftime was great, IIRC. The Southern Band performed and rapped some song about the Bucs that ended with "cause Tampa Bay is sissy-fied."

1987 was the first full Saints season I watched from begining to end (I was only 16). What a magical year that was.

Those uniforms flat out ruled. The Bucs took ten steps backwards when they switched from those classic, simple uniforms. They're way better than the new age, attention deficit disorder-enhancing, twelve-colored, swashbuckling, cartoon font-toting, cliche mobilized skull pirate flag logo-having, newly invented goldish/silverish/platinumish/blackish/grayish helmet color-sporting nonsense that you're rolling with these days.

Bucs suck.

I hate the Bucs just as much as the next Saints fan, but in terms of early success, they sort of can claim that over us. The Bucs did have a few good years with John Mckay and Doug Williams in the late 70's and early 80's. The 1979 season is a season that many old time Bucs fans and many in the Tampa area will never forget. They had a story book season and hosted the NFC Championship game vs the Rams and came pretty close to winning it(they might have won it if that Rams defender doesn't step on Williams throwing arm and put him out of the game with a blatant cheap shot). Leeroy Selmon of course had a HOF career and Doug Williams was a solid Pro Bowl QB most of the time he was there, But Hugh Culverhouse refused to pay him top dollar, even though John Mckay was really pushing him to pay the man but instead he let Williams walk away. When that happened, Tampa didn't even come close to a winning season for the next 15 years. Bo Jackson even refused to play for Culverhouse when the Bucs drafted him in the 1986 Draft, and this was when they still had Steve Young as their starting QB.

That's should tell you how badly Culverhouse ran the team and how hated he still is all these years later by Bucs fans. A truly incompetent sports owner if their ever was one

Honestly, I liked them better. I wish Tampa would have kept the men at work safety orange and just updated the South Beach Buc. :mwink:

On 12-7-1987, I had about the worst hangover in my life. I remember leaving the Dome after the game and going to the French Quarter -- the last thing I remember from that night was going into the Dungeon. I have no idea how I got home or what I did in between.
