You can't be more of a linux moron than me. I bet I'm working on the record for formats and re-installs.

Perhaps Linux is just telling you to switch to BSD.

Just get a Mac. You get a correctly configured BSD (close to linux) system plus a bunch of GNU tools when you install X11.

And if you wait for the new version of OSX to come out (later this year), not only will you get a computer with all kinds of new graphical bells and whistles, but the hardware is reportedly going to come with a hardware x264 encoder, which means you'll be able to convert videos with minimal effort by the CPU.

ummm, ok.

Maybe he wants FULL control of his OS? Contrary to what MACroSoft tells you, Linux and just about every other BSD (except Darwin/OS X) gives you just that.

Darwin does what it needs to and does it well (or so we think?), but past the kernel level, comparing it to Linux or any other BSD would be incorrect.

Installing X11 on OS X will make things work. If your system is pre-Panther, you're gonna have to work a little harder. I highly recommend FINK (http://www.finkproject.org) and use the Apple X11 (post Panther), not XDarwin. You have to remember, this runs ON TOP of Aqua. Try turning THAT off :mwink:. You can 'hide' Aqua and run whatever X11 Window Manager full screen (rootless), but performance is not close to native X11 friendly OSes.

but the hardware is reportedly going to come with a hardware x264 encoderSo I hear, believe it when I see it. It would be nice.

Maybe having full control of the OS is what's killing him:D

If that's what you want, then all the more power to ya! But isn't that kind of along the lines of having "too much freedom"?

Some are sheep, some are the herders.

Now, back in line, single file, please.
