View Full Version : Feisty Fawn thread
Buickman 04-04-2007, 11:21 AM I d/l'ed the 7.04 beta (i386 alt-install) release and installed it on another hd. Visually not much different. There is a new option under System -> Administration called 'Restricted Drivers.' It allowed me to install the NVidia driver. I also managed to get Beryl installed, and it works like it should.
Some quirks about it - After the initial bootup, it immediately wants to download 200 meg of updates, including a kernel update. Pretty annoying. I hope the final release includes all of those. There's also some boot problem that came up after I did the upgrades (and before I did the nvidia/beryl installs). During the boot it dropped out to a shell prompt. I couldn't figure out why. I entered init 6 thinking I'd just reboot, but it continued on into gnome. Kind of weird.
I'm still playing with it, so if I see anything else different, I'll post it here.
eaux-yeah 04-04-2007, 05:31 PM I really do not like that name.
Feisty Fawn ?? kinda' ghey, eh?
How 'bout Freaky Ferret or Mondo Mule?
BuickMan,
As you are finding out, Beta is Beta! EXPECT instability and things to suddenly stop working for no reason.
The downloading of mega updates will continue on a nearly daily basis as things change at a very rapid rate in the Beta Versions.
By doing what you're doing is one of the best ways for normal users to help make Ubuntu, or any distro, better.
When you run into problems, report the problems to the Ubuntu developers on the Ubuntu Forums, They need your feedback.
Buickman 04-18-2007, 06:10 PM FYI, tomorrow (Thursday the 19th) is the official release date.
shasta 04-18-2007, 09:31 PM im having them mail me bot ubuntu and kubuntu releases, see which one is better, i dont have high speed so it takes me too long to d/load
llama 04-19-2007, 12:06 AM For those of ya'll unfamiliar with Debian-based distros, that 200MB of updates are a good thing. Ubuntu should offer a netinstall, that works like Debian's do.
One can regularly grab the beta days before the official release and install. You get the exact same software.
Feisty is working for me, but I tried to upgrade the old-fashioned Debian way via apt-get and it completely failed. The 2.6.20-* kernels failed to boot for me. I finally gave up and did a clean install, spending hours getting my databases and software back up.
I really love Ubuntu as a desktop distro, but I think it absolutely sucks when it comes to servers.
shasta 04-19-2007, 01:23 AM i still cant get 6.10 ubuntu to work with my dialup so im hoping feisty ubuntu or the latest Kubuntu will have better support for dialup
Buickman 04-19-2007, 08:42 AM Last night I upgraded my mb and installed Feisty amd64 (over 300 meg of updates now). First thing I did was install Automatix2 which installed my Nvidia driver without a hitch. Had a few problems with beryl, but I followed the wiki which helped out;
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu_Feisty_with_AIGLX
There is one part where the author had to add Options "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" to the device section of xorg.conf, and I had to also do that. I used Automatix2 to install all the codecs, video players, and other stuff. There's also a wiki for doing other things here;
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Feisty
Later on this weekend I'll try to get the mail server running.
llama 04-19-2007, 02:57 PM I also installed last night. Woohoo!
Buickman 04-19-2007, 04:21 PM Now I installed the beta and then did all the updates. Does that mean I'm effectively running 7.04 or do I still need to d/l the final and install it?
Cajun Mike 04-19-2007, 05:36 PM Here is what I got when I tried to do the update
Failed to fetch http://vdlinux.sourceforge.jp/dists/experimental/audacious/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ubuntu.geole.info/dists/edgy/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ubuntu.geole.info/dists/edgy/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Buickman 04-19-2007, 06:42 PM Was that with apt or with a disc? I just d/led the disc pretty fast via torrent.
llama 04-19-2007, 06:45 PM The Ubuntu servers are getting hammered. Btw, if you installed the Beta, and did the upgrades you are now running Feisty.
You can check with:
cat /etc/lsb-release
Mine gives:
ken@llamakc 06:45:19:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=feisty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.04"
Buickman 04-19-2007, 07:37 PM Cool. I was afraid I'd have to re-install.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? My system will perform a shutdown, but not a restart. The bar on the splash screen gets to the end, and it just hangs there until I manually restart. I was going to look at the ubuntu forums, but thought I'd throw that out here first.
Cajun Mike 04-19-2007, 09:37 PM apt
llama 04-19-2007, 11:22 PM I should preface my "install" with the fact that I run some vanity servers at home off of the box. The standard, Debian-way of apt-get dist-upgrading between releases completely screwed me. I could not boot the new kernel. I spent two days on the forums and my 8 years of Linux experience trying to figure out the problem. I didn't. I backed my databases up and reinstalled clean. Ugh.
Ubuntu may be aggressive with releases but it's in no way comparable to Debian's backwards-compatibility for incremental upgrades.
Good luck. I am sad to say that I recommend every Feisty user save their important data and go for a clean install. Sucks, I know. I won't use Ubuntu for servers when i get another free machine.
shasta 04-20-2007, 02:06 AM any of you guys know anything about compiling connexant modem drivers? i tried following many different instructions from the ubuntu site but i still cant get it to work
Buickman 04-20-2007, 03:52 AM Cajun Mike, here's a thread where some other people are having problems;
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=286599
You may want to read thru that to see what's been working and what hasn't. It's already 11 pages. I just did a clean install, but if you have a lot of stuff installed, I can see where you'd be hesitant. I did see someone mention having to disable 3rd party respos, but that was for xubuntu.
eaux-yeah 04-20-2007, 02:38 PM I should preface my "install" with the fact that I run some vanity servers at home off of the box. The standard, Debian-way of apt-get dist-upgrading between releases completely screwed me. I could not boot the new kernel. I spent two days on the forums and my 8 years of Linux experience trying to figure out the problem. I didn't. I backed my databases up and reinstalled clean. Ugh.When upgrading from a beta to stable version of ANY distro, I would recommend a fresh install. Going from stable to stable should not be a problem.
Ubuntu may be aggressive with releases but it's in no way comparable to Debian's backwards-compatibility for incremental upgrades.
I have not experienced that, in fact, I was impressed how they (Ubuntu) have managed to stick very closely to the Debian way of things.
Good luck. I am sad to say that I recommend every Feisty user save their important data and go for a clean install. Sucks, I know. I won't use Ubuntu for servers when i get another free machine.Once again, fresh install from beta to stable.
Are you using the "Desktop" version for servers or the actual "Server" version? I have only setup a few Ubuntu "Servers" and found the episode to be quite uneventful. I wouldn't even attempt to setup a "Server" with the "Desktop" version. Way too many unnecessary items and services are installed for a Server, mainly X ?!?! :hihi: Of course, trying to do 'Desktop' things on the 'Server' version is not very fun, either, 'ahem CajunMike!
I also wait at least a week or 2 before upgrading to the next version and do that with ALL OSes, not just Linux.
The repository servers and/or mirrors will have less load and most of the initial bugs should be worked out in that time.
llama 04-20-2007, 07:06 PM Yeah, I'm a doofus. I had to combine my Desktop box because my old P3 server box gave up the ghost. Can't complain, the thing ran for five years with no problems. So I'm in the spot of running rarely-used vanity servers (web, mail) alongside my Desktop box.
The 'wait 2 weeks' thing is great advice.
FWIW, once I got the Desktop installed, adding the servers was a no-brainer. I'm looking forward to buying a new desktop machine soon and promoting my current box to server-only status, at which time I'll remove all of the unnecessary bits.
My 'won't use Ubuntu for servers' comment was out of frustration. I couldn't be happier with Ubuntu. Wish they'd fix the Feisty apache2-ssl-certificate issue though. Patience, grasshopper. I know: patience. ;)
Cajun Mike 04-21-2007, 09:14 PM Hey I resemble that remark, got Fiesty running no problems at all, well minor ones
Hey I plug in flash drives all the time and my ext. usb drive too. Not my fault that some people don't think that it's useful on a server!!! :hookline::plus-un2:
