Colston synonymous with late-round success

By LES EAST/The Advocate

METAIRIE — Last year at this time, Marques Colston was just one of hundreds of football players waiting to see when, and in many cases if, they would be drafted into the NFL.

After two long, nerve-wracking days of sitting through the NFL draft, Colston finally heard his name called when the New Orleans Saints used the 252nd (fourth-to-last) pick to grab the unheralded wide receiver from Hofstra.

Now, 12 months, 70 receptions, 1,038 yards, eight touchdowns and a basketful of rookie accolades later, Colston’s name is synonymous with the draft.

Teams and draft prospects alike are wondering who will become this year’s Marques Colston after this weekend’s draft.

“It’s actually funny to have my name in that question,” Colston said with a laugh after a recent workout during the Saints’ off-season program. “There probably will be one with so many good players every year in the draft who come in and surprise people. But still that’s crazy.”
