MLU do think Bama has a legit shot at Landon Collins? It's hard as heck to get guys out of LA. so it would be a huge coup. I'm not holding my breath.

I think that Collins definitely still up in the air, although the edge is to LSU. Bama can offer him more playing time early. LSU can offer playing time with the starting SS leaving, but not as much as Bama with Eric Reid and Craig Loston still hanging around. I'm hoping that he wants to play with former H.S. teammate Eric Reid to form a Dutchtown safety duo. I wouldn't be shocked to see him end up at Bama, but I would be surprised.
As for rounding out the class, one guy to keep an eye on is the #1 DE in the country: Mario Edwards. He just decommited from FSU and has thrown around OU, LSU, Bama, etc. as teams of interest. Denzel Devall and Lorenzo Phillips are two others that have strong interest in A&M and UF, respectively. Louisiana is extremely deep in LBers this year so if LSU loses out on Phillips, it will be because they have already signed equally talented guys. Several project as a DE/OLB hybrid like Mingo is playing. Chavis has lots of options with those players and I have to tell you that no one in the SEC has a better track record of getting the best out of LBers than Chavis. Either way, some think that Phillips and Devall just want out of Louisiana.
WR Dwayne Stanford is an tOSU lean, but LSU is in it. Nacho Garcia (OG) is a guy who wants to go to LSU, but has yet to get an offer. I think if LSU loses out on a couple, they could bring him in. Someone a lot of people have forgotten about is receiver Dhaquille Williams, out of East St. John. Many people have said that hes the best athlete ever to come out of that school. He's spent the last season in JUCO getting his grades right.

Sounds like there are a TON of great guys left on the board with only a few schollies left to give out, so have we made any mistakes in this class or able to grayshirt anyone to make some room?
You gotta wonder how much it hurts LSU in recruiting to not have a single night SEC game this year. I mean, how the heck are you supposed to show off to recruits during a friggin day game? Ok yea, the national exposure is nice and everything... but Tiger Stadium at night is our money shot. You just can't beat it!

If we have the problem of too many players committed (that the coaching staff felt were good enough to offer) and too many SEC type talented options interested in us to fit into our available schollys then I think we can safely say the lack of night games is not hurting us all that much.

Well take a look at our recruiting rankings. It may or may not be having an impact, but it's at least worthy of a discussion. Obviously this article can be debated, but hey... that's why we post here.
Homepage | MrSEC.com
LSU is behind Alabama, Florida and Awbarn in the Avg. Points Per Commit rankings.
We have one 2-star, ten 3-star and seven 4-star as of the time of this summary. Obviously update it for any recruits added since then... but I'm going to bed, so you can do that math if you so wish.
Still doesn't "prove" anything, so post away as you see fit.

MLU, do you know if Jeremy Hill straighten out his legal mess yet, which I think is more BS than JJ's situation.

1) There will at least two more updates to the player rankings before signing day. This class won't be "special" but it will be top 7 at worst.
2) Jacob Hester, Tyrann Mathieu, etc. were 3-star players. I lean to the coaching staff's evaluation of talent over the website run by some Bama fans.

I heard that he could be a possible scholarship offer, but nothing has appeared in the BR paper recently. I'm not sure if things are cleared up or not.

Rivals and Scout do a surprisingly good job of rating high school players particularly when you consider they are looking at and comparing thousands of kids around the country.
It is by its nature an arbitrary process. NFL scouts look at four years of college film and still miss on first round picks. Some two stars will excel and some five stars will bust, but for the most part there is a huge gap between a two star and a five star player. On average, a team loaded with rival's four star players will be considerably more talented than a team of three star players. Few two star players like Hester make it to the NFL. Most of the top performers for LSU are four and five star recruits. LSU does have a few outstanding three star players as well, just like the NFL has a handful of Colston and Pierre Thomas types.
That is the difference between an LSU and Alabama compared to an Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The ratings rankings are very much confirmed by what you see on the field. Teams like LSU and Bama can have a senior suffer an injury and replace him with a four star sophomore or freshman who would start at other SEC schools. LSU has a handful of player in the NFL who were not regular starters at LSU (Kieland Williams amd Richard Murphy come to mind).
Mathieu was actually a four star who came from nowhere on Rivals, Hester a two star. Rivals does consider offers in their rankings so one flaw in the system is that any kid LSU, Texas, Southern Cal or Alabama offers is likely to go up in the next rating period because of his offer sheet. A good example of this is LSU committ Danielle Hunter, a defensive end from Katy Texas. Hunter is a three star but he has a huge offer sheet which includes Texas a&M, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Arkansas. You might well see him get a fourth star because with his offer sheet Rivals is going to look more closely at him.
Reports are that Hill is resolving his legal problems and will enroll at LSU in the Spring. As deep as LSU is at running back, they could use another power back with Ware going into his junior season next year.
Landon Collins is between LSU and Alabama, but I think LSU leads by more than what people think. 90% of local kids will go to their local school, all things being equal, when push comes to shove. LSU and Alabama both have five and four star players coming back at safety, Collins could still start or see significant playing time at both places. LSU has helped itself lately by playing a lot of freshmen early.
It doesn't matter much if you are the top team or number five team in recruiting rankings. While I do not think the rankings are completely arbitrary, they are certainly not accurate enough that there is any real differnce between a team with a start average of 3.65 and one with a 3.75 average. I do think there is considerable difference between a number five class and a number fifteen class, for example, but no real difference between a closely ranked classes.
LSU is going to have yet another top ten class and maybe a top five class when all is said and done. I think they get Collins (probable). I think they get Lorenzo Phillips (better than 50%). They might get Liggins at quarterback. If they do not get Phillips I think they get Richie Brown or Channing Ward. Mario Edwards is a real possibility.
Miles has become an excellent recruiter. LSU continues to reload each year.

I should add that LSU very much wants to find a defensive tackle. The top prospects are Quay Evans and Nick James from Mississippi. James is committed to MSU but that story might not be over.
If LSU canot get either one of these two, you might hear a new name pop up. There are some under the radar defensive tackles out there, but as of now LSU has their sights set on the pair from Mississippi.

Offensive lineman Vadal Alexander from Buford (Ga.) High School committed to LSU on Monday.
Alexander chose LSU over offers from Alabama and Auburn. He gave the news to LSU coach Les Miles on Monday.
“It was great,” Alexander told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He was ecstatic. He was screaming and yelling, you know, only like Coach Miles can do. He is very outgoing. He was happy and he was definitely screaming.”
That could have been Auburn coach Gene Chizik screaming about Alexander’s commitment. He said he favored Auburn before his official visit to LSU this past weekend.
“It was one of those things that I just knew when I left from Louisiana on Sunday evening. It was the atmosphere, the coaches, and everything. There was nothing negative about LSU. It was all positive.”
Alexander is LSU’s 20th commitment for the class of 2012.

This is why honey badger coach takes what he wants... Les Miles sure does know how to recruit!

I think that Mathieu wasn't a 4 star until the lats update and only because LSU was so high on him. The only commitable offer he received from a major school was at LSU.

yeah you're right, Kiel would be more of a competition for Rivers than a successor.. i don't really know what to thik about Rivers; last yr people were saying that he was better at his age than Philip was-- then again, they always say that about younger siblings.
