Exactly what have you seen from Rivers in his redshirt year?

You forgot Russell Shepperd was the top QB coming out of high school.
Throwing out the recruit part, I think Zack Mettinburger will be the best pure QB LSU has had since Bert Jones

Honestly I am still going based upon the kind of player I felt he was at the HS level... His mechanics, and his game management where what stuck out to me as negatives. The questionable throws I could handle but the mechanics bother me. People compare his mechanics to Phillip but to me Stephens are worse... he has all the accuracy of a shotgun.
Of course with Kragthorpe perhaps he will get some quality coaching and develop properly, he certainly has the arm and the frame to do so... and even if he does sometime try ill advised throws he seems to be a smart kid who knows the game well.

Out of the blue LSU now leads for David Perkins, a speedy blue chip linebacker from South Bend, who decommitted from Notre Dame. Perkins will visit LSU for the Arkansas game and has said LSU is his leader now. He is in Rivals top 250 and the number 4 player from Indiana.
This guy is a perfect fit in Chavis's defense which emphasizes speed over everything. Linebacker is the one position on LSU's defense that is not stacked with NFL top prospects.
It will be interesting to see if this forces Lorenzo Phillip's hand. How many spots does LSU have for linebackers? I would assume both of these players are takes if they want to come but LSU has very few scholarships left to give.

I think the winner of this game definitely tips the scales for players in attendance.

I don't think the winner of any single game has ever tipped the scales for a player making the decision which school to decide and if it did, it speaks to a gross lack of intelligence of the player. You might as well be flipping a coin.

Maybe, maybe not but it sure is a lot more impressive to a visiting student when the team wins the game they are on the sideline for. Also, this is not just any single game. National titles have tipped scales before and the recruiting numbers prove it, this game is basically a national title until some other team in college football proves otherwise.

Denzel Devall has verbally committed to Alabama for 2012
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Bastrop (Louisiana) linebacker Denzel Devall has verbally committed to Alabama, according to reports.
Messages left with Devall were not immediately returned. His commitment was confirmed by TiderInsider.com and Scout.com.
Scout.com rates Devall (6-2, 240 pounds) a four-star recruit. He is the 22nd verbal commitment for its 2012 signing class.

A quick few tidbits that I have failed to mention over the early holiday season:
- Both Danielle Hunter and Travin Dural received a bump from three to four stars.
- Rumor has it that Redemptorist RB Jeremy Hill has had the charges dropped against him and will enroll in the Spring semester.
- OLB Deion Jones de-committed from Nebraska and committed to LSU. He's friends with Landon Collins and Denzel Devall. Some are hoping that Jones' commitment could mean good things for either Collins or Devall or both.

You hate to lose a guy like Devall. His is similar to the Eddie Lacy situation, though in that LSU had a lot of RBs offered and simply had to pick one to cut free. That was Lacy. This year LSU is stocking up on LBers and they have some excellent guys committed. Devall any other year would have been a huge priority and recruited with a full court press. That's not to say that he would have not still ended up at Alabama which is attractive to any top-notch MLB prospect, but LSU certainly would have made it a more difficult decision.
I wish him the best except for a specific four games over the next four years...

This was not completely like Lacy in that Lacy had grade problems and LSU did not recruit him hard until the very end.
LSU offered Devall early and has always been after him. You are right that it is similar in that LSU has some very good lb recruits this year and its possible that played a part in his decision. Devall never seemed that interested in LSU and no one seems to know for sure why.
Watch for Lorenzo Phillips to commit to LSU to add to their list of lb recruits this year. Losing Devall may help get Phillips and Phillips might be more in the Chavis mode -- smaller than Devall but faster.
If LSU can finish with a qb, Landon Collins and Phillips they will have yet another top five class. My guess is Alford or Liggins commits as our qb for the class.

Other than Torshiro Davis, I don't see that LSU has much to speak of in the Linebacking group. What am I missing?
From what I can gather, Bama is the team stacked at LB. Ryan Anderson, Dillon Lee, Reggie Ragland and Tyler Hayes are All 4 star recruits. They will have FIVE- Fourstar recruits at Linebacker!!! And they're all big!
I'm really bummed to see Devall switch and especially bummed that it's Alabama. He fits Saban's Big and Fast Linebacker mold and I was really looking forward to keeping him in state to play for LSU because I knew how badly Saban must want this kid.
