Georgia RB Isaiah Crowell dismissed after weapons charge.
Looks like Crow's days of playing college ball are done.
Quote:
According to the Athens Clarke County booking report, Crowell was arrested by Athens police at 3:37 a.m., at which time he was booked into the Athens Clarke County jail. The county's online jail booking report states Crowell bonded out at 12:44 p.m.
A police spokesman told UGASports that Crowell's arrest came following an early-morning stop at a police checkpoint on East Campus Road and Green Street on the Georgia campus. Four other individuals were in the car, but they were not arrested.
According to the spokesman, Crowell's car was stopped at 2:20 when an officer reported smelling the odor of marijuana. Crowell's car was searched, no marijuana was found but police did locate a 9-mm Luger handgun with the altered serial number. The gun was found under the driver's seat.

No criminal record, so he'll probably get some probation or community service, and go play at a Junior College or D2 school for a year or two. Dude is really talented, but needs to fix the off field stuff and learn to play tougher. He wasn't exactly a workhorse for UGA, taking himself out of the game way too often.

"Crowell facing 2-5 yrs on gun in school zone charge & 1-5 yrs on altered serial numbers, according to Georgia sentencing guidelines"

You think he gets probation or community service for two felonies? A gun in a school zone seems serious enough, but then the gun had a altered serial number. I'm not saying he won't, it just seems like serious charges to me.

Yeah. I do. Too many factors for him to face serious time. His mom owns the car. Other people allegedly drive the car. No priors. His consent to the search can be used as an indicator by a decent lawyer that he was unaware of the gun's presence. Losing his scholarship will be seen as a punishment. I doubt the AG will want to try to make a name for himself on this one, so he just might be willing to accept a plea that includes a diversion program in lieu of incarceration along with probation/community service. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty familiar with how things tend to go in Athens...

I really have no idea what will happen but you sound pretty knowledgeable so I'll ask you this. If the Police smelled marijuana do they still need a consent to search or is there now probable cause and they can search anyway?

I'm no legal expert by any means. I just grew up close to there, and as a UGA fan, have some knowledge of how they have done things in the past.
