I recall seeing pictures of LSU's 2012 SEC Championship ring, seeing on the side where it's engraved "#2 Nationally" and feeling embarrassed that they would have that put on the ring like it's something to brag about. Turns out, that's not why it's on the side of the ring.

I don't like putting it on there. A banner in the weight room and lockerroom would be more visible daily. Guys will probably put the ring away and not look at it. Dumb idea.
While they might not be physically looking at their rings everyday, the reminder of a 21-0 loss plastered on an item that's meant to serve as a reward for an achievement creates a lasting and permanent image in my mind. I can only imagine the impression that it had for the players.

Sure it creates a lasting image, but do they need an inscription on a ring as a reminder of their failure? Those are meant to be rewards of achievement, not failure. Maybe some would've worn it occasionally if they had won the BCSCG, now it's an expensive dust collector. It's a dumb idea.

I also like the concept, but not the execution. Not everyone that received a ring will be returning to the team this year to compete due to eligibility, NFL or other reasons, so their rings should not include a gentle stab at them not finishing. However Les Miles is only incentivized to care what happens on-the-field, I can see why he made this choice. However still not a fan of the execution. I would have preferred to see him drive this example home repeatedly using a forum that only applies to returning players.
They got one, though. The players have taken it to heart from the sound of things. I think its pretty clever. Much more clever than a banner or some t-shirts. After the first couple times of looking at it, no one remembers a banner. The locker room is probably full of them already. The feelings from seeing #2 on the ring? That **** sticks with you.

Agreed. It is an effective motivational tool for those remaining on THIS year's team, but there is some collateral damage. Is it worth ticking off your departing seniors to motivate the team they left behind? It's obviously nitpicking, but just wish he would have found a better way to drive the point home exclusively to the remaining (and incoming) team.
