2 things I never realized.......
Godell is getting 20m a year and Athur Blank is head of committee that approved it
Quote:
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s recent five-year contract extension will, by the end of its term, roughly double his current annual pay of about $10 million, sources said.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, chairman of the league’s compensation committee, declined to comment on financial details but confirmed the extension would bring Goodell in line with other top sports commissioners. MLB’s Bud Selig is believed to earn more than $20 million annually. \
“If you compare [Goodell] to any of the other commissioners in other sports, we think he would rank very high in that group, and he needs to be compensated on that basis,” Blank said in an interview at the Super Bowl.

Goodell has a very difficult job...only a small portion of it is player discipline. Aside from the rule changes and punishments, he's done an admirable job. Tagliabue isn't an easy commissioner to succeed but Goodell is doin an alright job thus far.

Does he deserve to have his salary doubled?

aside from the whole steering his boat into an iceberg, the captain of the titanic did a good job as well - catering was on point, the crew was generally snappy dressers, the band was often in tune

$10 million isnt a lot of money for a commissioner of the most popular sport in the country. $20 million seems about right
i dont think he deserves much more than that but seeing as how football, particularly the NFL, has swept the country over the past few decades, the guy in charge definitely deserves to make some money
obviously saints fans are bitter about this offseason, but in the grand scheme of things, goodell is growing the NFLs brand very successfully

the NFL is more popular than it ever has been....the titanic reference really doesnt make much sense here
goodell has made some very notable mistakes.....including coming down so hard on saints nation. but he has also helped globalize the league

until it hit the iceberg
we've been trying to learn the hubris lesson since the ancient greeks
and we're still trying

you're being very premature here
until the league crashes and burns you really dont have a ton of merit in that statement
apple has made some mistakes too.....like the ipod nano....but its also become the most popular phone retailer as well as the standard for mobile social networking.
not everything thats on top crashes to the ground

well the allusion is that we are at the moment of impact
hyperbolic? perhaps
incorrect? time will tell
plus it's not like nfl had a field hockey type audience before goodell took over

Thus far in the grand scheme of things, exceptionally few things that have been on top, haven't.

yea or enron or the stock market
we can go back and forth with references all day if you want
truth of the matter is that the future, at least the near future looks very bright for the NFL. we are witnessing the emergence of a sport as it take the world by storm.
in comparison to sports like soccer, football is still in its infancy but goodell and his team have made giant leaps and rapidly expanded the market of american football
what you are doing is looking at goodell from a saints fans perspective rather than an overall perspective. take off the black and gold blinders really quick and look at the popularity of the sport as a whole
football is on top and still growing

Couple of things could knock down the megalith that is the NFL.
Ex-player lawsuits. If they actually take hold and the NFL is forced to pay damages on top of medical bills, pain and suffering and all that jazz....
and
The public finding out that the league misrepresented their case against the Saints (ie - lied about it), causing a major backlash against the institution. This of course would add infinite fuel to the lawsuits and make any NFL defense virtually null and void.

indeed, but not necessarily the nfl
As AceTW is saying the NFL could be in trouble - not likely but possibly
if there is a smoking gun (like with big tobacco) it's certainly possibly that certain franchises take a big hit - and if it happens to enough teams, who's to say that it doesn't dissolve and re-incorporate as another league?
again not probable but possible

I don't think you need to credit Goodell too much. He probably deserves as much credit as Bill Clinton does for the internet.
Its a clearly superior spectator sport to the other options and viewers recognize that. Goodell is not necessary.

He's in the midst of blowing credibility right now with his own rendition of LIE-Gate. He's selling the media a quite different story than the truth.
