I'm about to take off for Gadsden, AL (who the hell gets married in Gadsden, AL?!), and I'll have family obligations pretty much all night and much of tomorrow. I highly doubt we'll get to my next pick, but please make sure to let me know if it gets close.

Pittsburgh checking in with pick ready, unless I have to re-write based on what Detroit and Houston do.

I've texted Numbskull twice. Still waiting to hear from him. Gremillionaire & jbourque, be ready. If you'll be out in the next hour or so, PM me a shortlist.

He got one from me as well. I am tempted to make a pick for him and move forward. We had some great momentum going.

With the 119th pick in the SR.com "Official" Mock Draft, the DETROIT LIONS select...
Jonathan Massaquoi, DE/OLB, Troy
Quote:
|
NFL DRAFT SCOUT PRE-COMBINE TOP 64: 62. Jonathan Massaquoi, OLB, Troy, 6-2, 250, 2-3...Some NFL teams think Massaquoi is an untapped talent who might have benefitted more if he played college at a higher level with more expectations and better competition. He has an interesting combination of strength and agility that served him well at that level without showing much technique. Massaquoi made a stop at Butler Community College before going to Troy in 2010. He was as named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year going into the 2011 season and finished his two-year career with 128 tackles, including 31 for a loss and 19.5 sacks.
|
Quote:
Pass rush: Can get to the quarterback in a variety of ways and is active with twists and stunts. Aggressive and attacking rusher. Needs to improve his body positioning and allows himself to be tangled up, lacking the upper body strength to quickly stack and shed. Plays with inconsistent technique and is still very raw with his hand use.
Run defense: Keeps his eyes elevated with good awareness. Needs to show better discipline and play assignment football, too often losing contain and playing reckless. Gets himself in trouble when he allows his frame to get upright and can be lazy with his pad level. Often overanxious and overaggressive with questionable instincts and anticipation - strong concerns about his read/react ability.
Explosion: Shows quick initial get-off with explosive burst and rare suddenness for the position. Loose hips with the movement skills to redirect in a flash.
Strength: Possesses a filled-out frame with good body thickness. Has done a nice job spending time in the weight room getting stronger, adding over 50 pounds since his senior year in high school. Has the raw strength to shrug off blocks with his fast playing style.
Tackling: Has good length with vines for arms to wrap ballcarriers. Chases down the action with excellent pursuit skills, playing at full speed with a hard working attitude. Constantly in the backfield, but leaves production on the field and needs to consistently finish.
Intangibles: Was productive in his two seasons on the field at Troy, collecting a combined 31.0 tackles for loss and 19.5 sacks - led the team in both categories each of last two seasons. Shorter than ideal and lacks the ideal size to keep his hand on the ground. Played mostly in three-point stance as an end in Troy's three-man front and lacks a natural position for the next level. Has been known to take a few plays off and will disappear for stretches. Coming off a pedestrian season compared to his 2010 production.

Man! I was hoping that he would slip into the 5th round. I nearly made him our pick at 118. He has a lot of upside....great potential. I'd love to see what Wade Philips could do as his coach.
BTW...a nice little run on DL here....I like the Massaquoi pick too.

I've got Denver & Houston's picks, so as soon as jbourque (Pitt) makes his pick I'll post the other two, which will bring us to New Orleans, which is where we'll park for awhile. Any suggestions for the Saints pick to pass along to ScottB?

With the 119th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select:
Senio Kelemete, OG Washington
Height: 6'4" Weight: 307

GM Summary:
With a deep draft at the OG/OT position it's time for the Steelers to turn their attention to the Offensive Line. It's very important to this franchise to keep Roethlisberger as clean as possible. This was never more clear than when Roethlisberger was handicapped by a fractured right thumb mid-season and and suffered a high ankle sprain that ultimately reduced his effectiveness down the stretch and basically ended our chance at a Superbowl repeat. Team Owner Art Rooney has called on Roethlisberger to "tweak" his game and take fewer hits, and as an organization we should do our best to insure he is adequately protected. The Steelers had 10 different offensive line alignments last year and are looking to stabilize.
Offensive Line Reshuffling:
Quote:
|
OL: No quarterback has been sacked more the past few years than Roethlisberger. Part of that is that he holds the ball longer than most QBs, but most of it is that the pass protection hasn't been all that good. With left tackle Max Starks out of the picture for now, Marcus Gilbert is expected to move from the right side to replace him. Tomlin is high on the guy and thinks the move should be seamless. While Colbert said the club could consider re-signing Starks, who tore his ACL in the playoffs, Pittsburgh has Gilbert penciled in at his position. Doug Legursky returns to left guard after replacing Chris Kemoeatu, who was released in a salary-cap move. After years of waiting on Kemoeatu, the Steelers tired of his mediocre play and costly penalties. Center Maurkice Pouncey is one of the game's top offensive linemen, and the Steelers suffered when a high-ankle sprain removed him from the lineup down the stretch. Look forWillie Colon to take over at right tackle after missing all but one game the past two seasons, though there's always the possibility he could step in at right guard, but Ramon Foster seems more likely there.

Senio Kelemete:
Quote:
Overview:
A surprisingly fluid athlete who started at three different positions (and on both sides of the all) during his career with the Huskies, Kelemete may wind up playing a different one once drafted into the NFL. Kelemete signed with the Huskies as a defensive tackle and started four games there as a freshman in 2008, playing in eight contests overall (four tackles). He made the switch to the offensive side of the ball in the spring of 2009 and wound up starting 11 of 12 games at right guard as a sophomore, earning honorable mention All-PAc-10 honors. As Washington's most reliable and athletic offensive lineman, Kelemete was asked to move again as a junior. This time the move stuck as he started the next 26 consecutive games on the blindside.
Kelemete is light on his feet and made steady gains in his second season as a starting left tackle, earning second-team all-conference honors in 2011 and a spot on the Senior Bowl. Ultimately, Kelemete's moderate height and arm length, however, is likely to force him back inside in the NFL. Considering his pass blocking potential, his best fit may ultimately be at left guard. Considering his versatility, potential as a pass blocker and aggression as a run blocker, Kelemete could earn consideration within the top 100 picks.

Analysis:
POSITIVES: Versatile player who has started at a high level outside and inside for Washington. Good initial quickness to seal defenders from the action. Powerful hands which he uses well to get an initial jolt to the defender. Flashes some nastiness to his play and seems to enjoy the physicality of the trenches. Isn't satisfied with just blocking one man; will peel back and look for defenders pursuing from the backside, as well. Good lateral agility and balance to mirror the defender when protected, though he does not have the length or agility to remain at left tackle against NFL speed. Possesses light feet and the ability to get out and block at the second level. Was occasionally asked to pull from left tackle and serve as Chris Polk's lead blocker, showing very good agility and physicality when meeting linebackers in the hole. Two-time team captain.
NEGATIVES:While light on his feet for a guard prospect, Kelemete does not possess the range or size to remain outside against NFL speed. Has to do a better job of keeping his eyes up and feet moving on contact as he'll lose defenders too often when in position to control them by supplying a strong initial punch but failing to remain in control when doing so. Possesses good strength in his upper body but needs to continue to improve his core strength. Better suited to a zone blocking system due to his athleticism rather than simply driving defenders off the ball at this time.

Thought this was interesting enough to share. It's Senio Kelemete and Washington Huskie teammate Alamada Ta'amu engaged in a "situp" contest at Seaworld against a Walrus, a perk of some fun time surrounding a bowl game. Interesting and worth nothing, both players will remain teammates as both were drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in this draft.
