Best of the Decade in the NFL. (You might be surprised where Saints were ranked.)

Best of the Decade in the NFL - A New Formula for Determining Success

Quote:
...This point value system places the highest emphasis on success in the Conference Championship and Super Bowl results while simultaneously avoiding the problem of placing too much added emphasis on postseason results—if it is indeed possible to over-value championship games.

After running the numbers on the season-by-season results of the National Football League from 2000 through 2009, the following final results were reached. Note that by this system a 55.00 is the highest possible point total, assuming a single team consistently was the #1 seed in their conference and won the Super Bowl for ten years in a row...

7th Place: New Orleans Saints — 8.25
  • 1 Super Bowl Win (Super Bowl XLIV)
  • 1 Super Bowl Appearance (Super Bowl XLIV)
  • 1 NFC West Division Title (2000)
  • 2 NFC South Division Titles (2006, 2009)
Analysis: With only three playoff appearances on the decade, the Saints might be ranked a little high on the list. However, their high point score is the result of their recent win in Super Bowl XLIV and a playoff push all the way to the NFC Championship Game in 2006. It doesn’t hurt that all three playoff appearances came by way of division titles as well.

Not bad.

And I especially like that Jerry's Kids are ranked in the bottom half.

I do like the formula putting more of an emphasis on the playoffs, but you have to invest SOMETHING in the regular season. Just because the Texans never made the playoffs I'd still say their body of work was greater than the Chiefs.

Not sure where people would want a team like the Saints who didn't sniff the playoffs for the majority of the decade to be ranked.

That's our failing in not being ranked higher in this listing. No consistency. The Eagles were rewarded for consistency and placed ahead of us, and rightfully so.

Good list. I like when a formula is used (see my top 20 QB season performances of SB winners) and no emotion or opinion is involved.

It is what it is.

I thought the ranking was more than fair to the Saints.

It's hard to weigh the Colts as high as they are since they are notoriously poor in the playoffs. This list is good, but putting the Bucs that high, IMHO, is just not accurate.

Not surprised we had a pretty good decade and we topped it off with a Super Bowl. We also had the most wins out of the NFC South. Hahaha Falcons only have one division win from 2004

Trying to figure out how we are ahead of Tampa Bay in that formula? Looks like we should be 8 behind them.?

Nevermind... I guess with us having a 1 and a 2 seed and winning at least 1 game each of our 3 playoffs appearances trumped their 5 appearance with some 1 and outs.

Not a bad placement for the Saints, imo. It couldn't have been worst like #20!

a title goes a long way

before the sb win, we probably would've been ranked much, much lower
