Brees, Saints not likely to have long-term deal before OTAs launch
Quote:
As Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune explains it, the chances of that happening before the launch of OTAs are “practically zero.” Which means that the Saints would not only be missing a head coach for their 10 opportunities to prepare for training camp, but also their starting quarterback.
And there’s no sign that a breakthrough is coming. “Nobody has picked up the phone for more than a month to resuscitate talks, and there’s no indication either side will reach out in the near future,” Triplett writes.
The key date, then, will be July 16, the deadline for signing a franchise player to a long-term deal. After that date, Brees will be relegated to a one-year, $16.371 million contract. After that date, he’d gain no additional leverage by holding out, and he’d lose more than $1 million for each regular-season game missed.
Maybe that’s why the Saints aren’t picking up the phone. Maybe they realize that, eventually, Brees will have to choose between taking the best deal made before July 16 or gaining nothing by holding out of training camp — and in turn hurting the team’s chances (and his own) of being ready to go as of Week One.
Still, the real damage begins on May 22, when the Saints begin to lay the foundation for training camp. Even if Brees shows up for training camp, the Saints will have had to get through the offseason without one thing that their primary competitors in the NFC will have had: their starting quarterback.

Whatever let Chase Daniel have the job. Stop sweating Drew he's done in 3R4 years so enjoy it while it last. We are so spoiled are you going to jump off the bandwagon now or after Bress retires? WHODAT forever no matter who the QB is...

While I will agree that Drew> Daniel, I have to agree with duck22. I will be a Saints Fan regardless of who is our QB. I do want Drew in camp and for OTA's and Drew does give us the best chance of winning. Who knows maybe Chase is better than any of us give him credit for.

I wonder just how much having a great role model like Drew would be to the State. They could throw him a few million a year to make a few commercials and appearances for, that should help get him what he wants his contract up to.

All I'm saYing is are you still going to be a real saints fan after drew calls it quits???? Ask yourself give me a true answer. A lot of y'all will be talking bad about us. Show your true colors now!!! If Drew goes down what you going to do change the channel??? Are you going to sell them tickets? What will you really do if drew sits out for the year? I no he won't but ask your self what team will you be cheering for in 4R5 years? Don't let the truth and reality hurt you. WHODAT NATION FOR LIFE.

I konda feel like we as fans need to become more vocal and do something to let the front office know the extent of the frustration on the fans!

I might just go into hibernation until July 16th, don't care if he doesn't sign until then.

I'll support our beloved Saints no matter what, BUT good God man, get him signed! If you're ever going to slightly overpay for a player, THIS is the man you want to do it on lol. We've got to start sounding off to the front office our displeasure, we've been patient and the time for being in that mindset is just about to end.

So Drew is 33 and his birthday isn't until Jan. You think Drew will be retired or washed up at 35 or 36. Are you that much of a glass half empty guy that you think that? Drew works really hard at staying in shape. His accuracy and strength come from impeccable form and core strength. Seven more seasons and he plays the whole season except for a possible SB still 39.
I have been a Saints fan from the very begging. Will always be one. I don't blame Drew for not wanting to play under the franchise tag. By the time he retires he will have quite a few of the all time carrier records. Pay the man

You may be the worst poster I've ever seen. That's actually quite an accomplishment considering you've only been here a month.
