Ok, Mr Glass half empty.
I prefer to see this as the first of many victories the "experts" said Drew Brees could not achieve this year. SUPERBOWL.

This isn't bad for the fans. Brees won his victory. Set the big precedent that he wanted to set, devalued the franchise tag a little. Saints have to pay now. Brees has no reason to drag it out any longer.

Now if we could just get an arbitrator to rule our way in a bounty-gate case, we'd really be in business.

I really hope the league keeps their nose out of our business this one time and does not cause any more undo delay for us and Drew to get this deal done.
We don't need an appeal for this. The Saints do not want your help Roger. Not now. Stay away. Please don't think you are protecting the shield by appealing this ruling which will only further delay an already drawn out process that is now rapidly approaching the witching hour.

NFL can appeal the ruling. Brees and Saints have til 7/16 to do long term deal. Ruling gives Brees leverage in this negotiation

Not so sure the cap is going top increase all that much. They have already reportedly borrowed from future caps in order to get this years slightly higher than last year. The new formula ours more of the players share into benefits that before

I know it would bump to 23.5MIL next year, but does this ruling affect this year as well?
Not that it matters in the grand scheme, because I"m sure he will be signed anyway, I'm just curious.

according to ESPN, this year is unaffected.

If I'm not mistaken doesn't the cap expand in either 2013 or 2014 due to television revenues?

Basically the Colts i.e. GM Bill Polian pride himself on "building through the draft" and "developing in house." Which is not a bad way to build your team, Green Bay and the Steelers have done it for years and they've been outstanding at it. But here is the thing about building through the draft, you better hit, more than you miss. The last 5 or 6 drafts by the Colts have been bad, like really bad. Maybe a few red-chip players at best.
On top of that, Pollian didnt use other resources at his disposal to infuse more talent on the roster (trade market, free agency). They prided themselves on "never making a spash in FA". Now Im sure you will blame that on Manning's contract, but it's simply not the case. I've looked at their cap space going back a few years, and they've had plenty of cap space to draft talented players, shoot, look at what we were able to do this year with the very limited cap space we had.
The problem is they didnt truly evaluate their players. Mannings elite ability kept the competive, and masked their deficiencies. But as the lead evaluator Polian should have seen that the team was devoid of talent. There is a reason they consistently were terrible in the preseason, that usually means you have bad depth. There is reason they consistently sucked on special teams, that also means you have bad depth.
Add the Non-coaching of Caldwell and the rest of the Yes men, you get a recipe for failure as soon as Manning steps away.
This is why Jim Irsay blew the whole thing up. He knew the problems were deeper than just Manning being unhealthy. Polian is a good GM but failed because of stubborness.
Saints will continue to be successful even if we pay Drew Brees big bucks because Loomis isnt stubborn like that, he evaluates every player individual and places a grade on them. He uses all the tools at his disposal, UDFA, Free Agency, Trades, the draft, etc. Not to mention Loomis is a master at the cap.
Saints will be in the hunt for the next 5 years, thats what this news means to me.

Wonder if those unnamed franchise players in the PFT story a couple days ago who were "tired" of Drew's grievances still have a problem, lol.

Yeah I wondered what that player was whining about... then I heard last night that this "unnamed franchised player" said that "the NFLPA was worried more about Brees's situation than theirs"... I was like you gotta be kidding me?
So junior high-ish. Now I'll bet this same player is flipping cartwheels now.
