This is what's wrong with football! So it's OK for a guy like Drew to demand so much for all you who don't remember 2 KEY PICKS AGAINST S.F., I hate this more than B.S. bounty scandal. If we payout what he wants it will chew us up down the road. GREED,GREED.GREED.....

Yes, Drew is what's wrong with football. He's the best at his position, brought us a Lombardi, constantly does charity work.. why were we cursed with the likes of Drew?

I really don't care how much Brees gets paid, as long as he gets paid. If we don't pay him and he eventually walks, the Saints win NOTHING significant for a significant amount of time. If we pay him and can't afford anything else, we are still a contender because Brees makes everyone around him better. Having Brees and little more is better than having all the pieces without him under center.

No QB in the history of the NFL has had to play under the conditions Drew has. He signed with a team with no stadium, who's practice facility was still being used by the Natl Guard. With an arm that one year earlier was ripped from its shoulder socket he put us in the playoffs. He makes it to the SB and he faces the best of all time, and the outcome? Drew wins. Now he will play without a coach. And the outcome ? Drew wins. That's why Drew can ask for and get 20 million. He does what none have done before him and none will do after he's gone.

I know right. And what about that Peyton Manning guy? He threw a KEY PICK in Super Bowl XLIV that essentially lost the game for his team, but yet he's making like 19 mil.

Did you actually read what you posted? Without Drew forget any chance of another championship. So we don't pay him and down that road we crash and burn. It's business if you were in his position would you give up millions
just to be considered a good guy? I hate posts like this more than the BS bounty scandal.

The point is to win games and win a SB. We win more games by paying Drew and taking a cap hit than we would by... Doing ANYTHING else besides that.

All these people complaining about Brees' cap figures.. I mean.. really?
This ruling only adds a few million in year two, it's not a drastic change. He was already going to get a big contract. Eli's contract didn't ruin the giants. Manning's contract didn't ruin the Colts, the Colts just had no offense without Manning. Just like if we lost Brees now, before he got paid, our team would go from divisional winner to 3rd-4th place, even with everyone else on the team.
Now, this is an interesting ruling. It's a win for players overall. However, while this may help Drew in year 2, I think overall it may benefit the Saints.
Let's talk math.
So, a first franchise tag is the average salary of the top 5 salaries or 120% of your previous year salary.. whichever is higher. Second is the same. Third is the same, but adds 144%.
So, if this was Brees' first tag (which it's not) then his salaries over the next three years would have been:
16.25M
19.5M
28.08M
Total = 63.83M i.e. double the salary per year what he made in his last contract. About 21.3M/Year average.
Now, This is his second tag, so the starting figure is the same, but year two gets a boost and there is no year three.
16.25M
23.4M
Total over 2 years is 39.65M, which equates to 19.825M per year.
So, as you can see, from an "average per year" perspective, this ruling Hurt Brees. Now, you can argue some finer points, such as guaranteed free agency a year earlier, but other than gaining some money in year two, he losses out. All it does is really grant players more freedom of movement, so teams can't franchise a guy three times, trade the last one, then get franchised 3 more times and career is over.
Now, let's think about this in terms of contracts. If Drew gets a 5 year contract, with those average salaries, they'd look like this.
If Brees 1st tag (not the case) - 5*21.3 = 106.5M
Brees 2nd tag (ruled today) - 5*19.8 = 99M
So, Loomis still has some negotiation power here. He could argue that the total has gone down, while it may be more front loaded. He'd also point out that Drew stands to earn a lot more today by signing, because of the signing bonus, that if he wanted to play hard and do two tags (this and next year), hey may or may not get in the future.
I think they'll meet in the middlish.. It will be around a 5 year 100-104M contract, and about 50-60M will be guaranteed. Which is what a lot of us have been saying before. The details are in the salary/bonus structure.
I think we'll hear something before my birthday (July 16th)
Man, it didn't hurt my head as much the first time. Guess I was sober the other day and not so much today.
Great post though.
LOL, yeah no way I could post that now after all the vodka I drank today. Copy and Paste all the way. I just figured the math would start some real conversation.. you know.. beyond the "Brees is greedy" or "going to kill our cap space" crap.
Im glad it worked out this way. If they had ruled the Tag Limits were by individual team it would definately be detrimental to the players. This way, the precedent is set. The Teams CAN franchise (so they have some control, early on) but during trades, transfers, over time the control slowly transfers to the Player. Im sure the owners wern't too happy, but the players have to be.

The second deal, now reality, he can walk after the second tag and demand free-market money. That kills the entire average salary argument. Worth way more than 7 million over the life of the deal.
