This could be the year Brees wins MVP!

I know currently Brees is not in top running for MVP, but still hear me out. I am a big statistics guy and rewatched a lot of games because the emotion of the game makes you remember things differently. Although Brees seemed to start off pretty bad, when you look at the game situation, ie down two scores with no help from defense and nothing from run game and not the normal Oline protection, you will see numbers aren't as bad as they might seem.

First off, the Claim by Graham that replacement refs have hurt tempo offenses was absolutely correct, just look at this past weekend and our game, Packers, Patrioits, etc. Secondly, Brees had a very low 54% completion percentage, but when you take out drops, throw aways, and spikes to stop clock, he increases to 69.7% completion for first 3 games and even higher of you include Packers game. Basically, I'm trying to establish that even though Brees is 0-4, he has carried the team and put them in the position to win every game and of last game is playing about his normal level.

Now the current situation is perfect for Brees to run away with MVP if he and the offense continue where they left off from Packers game and start putting together a bunch of wins. If he leads us to playoffs, what better story than a team that lost all their coaches and was written off after losing every game of first quarter, but had a QB that refused to give up and starting from a record breaking game where he breaks a 50 year old record comes storming back to have one of the hottest teams going into postseason! What better story and what more defines Most Valuable Player more than a guy taking his team on his back.

Currently Brees leads all QB in overall yardage and is just 1 TD off the lead. He leads in number of first downs and is top 10 in many categories

Unlike last year that had Brees, Brady, Rodgers, and even Vick starting and early favorite for MVP, this year doesn't have really any strong canadates so far with early talk of Manning, Romo (at least before last night, Ryan, and Brady. A popular mention for 1st qtr is Ryan, but his numbers are not so impressive at closer look. First off, the defense and ther record takeaways are just as MVP as Ryan so far. His completion stats read like a game manger with a few big throws mixed in, only 7 20+ yard throws and 1 40+ yard throw so far. Also, over a 1/3 of his throws are 3 yard screen passes that help rack up his passer rating. He also benefits from great receivers that help him out with poorly thrown balls. The long pass to Roddy at end of Panthers game was supposed to lead White, but he had to stop and move to inside to catch that and a better safety and corner would have intercepted or broken up pass! Finally, the defense help is HUGE, about half of Ryans scores have come on fields of 31 yards to 1yard long. The defense got Ryan 4 int of Manning for 13 points and still only won by 6. Also, Ryan doesn't beat the 30th ranked Panthers defense if not for forced fumble on a 1st down to ice the game. That's another one he can thank the defense for!

Bottom line, what better MVP story than a QB breaking a record thought never broken and then rescuing the season after all the pundits wrote them off! I'm not saying it will happen for sure, but it's possible if both offense and defense continue to improve every week and Breeslays
Is he did this past weekend or better!

Unless the Saints pull off a miracle comeback and make it to the playoffs, I don't see it happening.

Well that was essentially the point of the thread, did you read it before commenting? The only difference, for MVP it doesn't mean the team needs to win SB, Brees plays great and we make it to playoffs is a great story and shows his value, especially as the only team playing without a head coach!

I hate the say it, but right now, you know the media is dying to give it to Matt Ryan....just like they were dying to give it to Rogers last year. The media has been saying he is elite for the last 3 years and now with the Saints, Pats and Packers struggling, I can see handing it to him.

Maybe I can put it another way.

First I, not saying he will win MVP or a top candidate right now.

This past week he put up a top 5 performance in Lambeau against the currently #1 pass defense against a SB favorite playing angry after having a game stolen

Although losing, he still has put up top 10 to #1 stats in most categories

If he continues to pay at or above the level he played this past weekend where most of the opponents will not be of the Packers caliber, there is chance to end with top QB stats,NAND probably a lot of wins

I was adding th fact he could get us a lot of wins and the fact he would overcome worst punishment ever, no HC, and worst start, could maybe make him a more attractive candidate than someone with a slightly higher rating!

Thats it, the situation seems so bad that if he turns it around he could beat out someone with slightly higher stats! NPR sure based on this past weekends performance where he had best QBR in division, why it seems an absolute impossibility to repeat similiar performances when he has improved every week and so has the help from receivers and defense!

The real refs at back and every top offense from last year performed better this week than Ryan. Brees leads Ryan in most categories from yards, 1st downs, completions, etc and Ryan has had better QBR the first 3 games but mainly because he is checking it down on short fields and not throwing it am avg 49 times like Brees. Once Brees, Brady, Manning, and Rodger, pass up Matty Checkdown in the few better stats he has right now, nobody will be talking about Ryan. Yesterday while Brees was slicing up the #1 pass defense, Ryan was throwing an interception into his endzone against #30 defense.

I was actually thinking the media would help Brees. He will be subject of coverage this week and next as he breaks Unitas record. There is talk about his good performance against Packers. Another great showing and big win over Chargers, if it happens, will mean next weeks media coverage of Brees will be look at this guy break a record never thought to be broken and by the way, two great showings and a win, do the Saints have life? Then a divisional opponent the following game puts us in second place tie in division. Then the story could be that defense is improving again, Offense and Brees is clicking, two win in a row, Vitt coming back; now all of a sudden we are the subject of much more coverage and that will help Brees!

unless the Saints end up with the best record. He doesn't have a chance. Sadly that's how these things are won if your last name is not "Manning"

Brees would have to go 12-0 and throw 40 more td's before he is even considered.

Completely disagree, 12-0 is a team record! This an individual accolade and if he plUs at a top level and finishes with top stats, why wouldn't he win? Further, i think the fact the team started 0-4 and was written off, if he rallies the team back to 9-7 or 10-6 and makes playoffs, that will be another point to win MVP!

Playoffs, even at 9-7, would mean he overcame a statistical 1% chance to make playoffs, how is that not something that would help him win MVP if he pulls it off!? Remember that Even with the rough start, Brees is at the top of many of the QB categories still, so what I'm saying is not impossible!

As much as I hate Matt Lice, he did not check down on that last drive heave to White. White made a great play, but whatever I was saying...**** the falcons.
