Dont expect imminent news on Parcells
Good read by Brad Briggs on NFP
Quote:
Payton could walk away from the Saints beginning Sunday and continue to play golf and visit with his longtime friend Parcells. They could go over all facets of the organization, personnel, schemes, staff, etc. That wouldn’t violate any NFL rules as Parcells isn't a club employee. Just two friends talking football. The Saints, in the meantime, could explore some alternative options in the event Parcells decided against the job. In that time frame, the Saints could also satisfy the Rooney Rule. Before New Orleans begins its offseason program, Parcells could make up his mind to take the job and – presto – the Saints would have someone ready to take over that was as up to speed as an outsider could possibly be.

Of course. But I have trouble believing that this wouldn't be considered a violation of Payton's suspension, whether Parcells is technically a Saints employee or not.

As long as he is not acting on behalf of the organization, I would think Goodell would have to prove it is not just a couple of friends (without NFL jobs) hanging out.

How would it be a violation. Parcells is not employed by the NFL in any capacity.

Would Payton be allowed to assist in interviewing or recruiting a Head Coach? I seriously doubt it. Wouldn't this be similar? Whether or not Parcells is technically a Saints employee at the time, if Payton's discussions with him are related to future employment with the Saints, that sounds like a violation to me.
Again, I'm not saying he couldn't get away with this to some extent. But it seems awfully speculative to me to conclude that this "wouldn’t violate any NFL rules."

Goodell said he has no probelm with Payton being involved in the search for an Interim Head Coach. Now, when the suspension begins, Payton cant have any contact with Benson or Loomis, who would be the ones doing the hiring. But in the meantime, there is nothing the league can do about Payton and Parcells hanging out together as long as Parcells is not working for the NFL at the time.

I said this like 4 hours ago in another thread.
That it would be best for us to wait on hiring Parcells as long as possible so Payton can keep loading him up with knowledge of the organization.

Yall are missing Wild Magnolias point. Of course he knows Payton can talk to Parcells before his suspension. But the article implies Payton can essentially keep recruiting/training Parcells for an indefinite period of time that will obviously extend past the beginning of Payton's suspension, given that its already March 28. No matter what you call it, Payton would be seen as recruiting Parcells during his suspension, which possibly violates the rules. Not saying he can't have any conversation with Parcells, but it would be wise for the Saints to tread very lightly.

Well, we obviously won't know for sure until the official parameters of the suspension are made known by the NFL. Until then, we're both just speculating. But again, I have a very hard time believing that Payton would be allowed to conduct any activity with Parcells that is related to future employment with the Saints. The "but he's not a Saints employee" argument just doesn't seem to hold water. That would open up countless loopholes to the suspension, and I just don't buy that the NFL would allow it.

I think that's a very valid point. But I also think that Payton doesn't have to announce to the world that he's going to spend a couple of weeks with Parcells either. It's hard for a famous person to travel without anyone knowing about it but it can be done.

Yes, it's possible that we could get away with it (although I'm not sure that would be a wise idea). But there's a big difference between saying we can get away with it, and saying it's not a violation of NFL rules.
