Emmit Holds Out...
I remember when Emmitt was the star player for the Cowboys and was a hold out. He sat out the first two games of the season and I always wondered how I would feel if a Saints player sat out.
Anyway the Cowboys eventually struck a deal and they went on to win the Superbowl that year.
I find myself personally not that engaged. Perhaps I have seen my favorite players let go before and am now able to just roll with it even if its the best player we have ever had.
My gut tells me he probably wont sign for camp at all. Obviously, he doesnt like the franchise tag as expressed during the CBA negotiations. And I am not sure how much the suspension has demotivated Loomis on this year anyway. Maybe he is willing to let him sit the season out and start fresh 2013.
Maybe these things just dont get done until after the whistle blows.
Either way I am not going to harbor any ill-will to either Brees or the Saints regardless of outcome.
Clearly, the Saints recognize how many butts Brees puts in the seats and if they dont want to pony up then thats their call.
If Brees doesnt sign then I am a little disappointed, but not begrudgingly. Mostly I am disappointed that he doesnt respect the Franchise Tag system and only thought to restructure the thing for himself instead of making more insistance the whole thing get trashed for all players. Or perhaps, he just figured he would work the system the same as every player before him.
-Thanks for allowing me to vent which I thought would be best done in one of the millions of threads already out there, rather then starting a new one.

Drew Brees Contract talk on this forum =
I don't know how many more good points can be made that have already been made.

I tend to side with the guy who is the only Super Bowl MVP in franchise history, not with the owner who gave us years and years of mediocrity and wanted to move the team to San Antonio.
Drew is the best player we have ever had. Without him, there's no wait list, no sell outs, no national TV and no Super Bowl.
Benson and Loomis are playing Russian Roulette with the goose that lays the golden eggs. Drew deserves every penny he is asking for, and now he is getting angry. Is anyone going to pay $300 a seat to watch Chase Daniel? No.
If Benson can pay $300 million for a basketball team, he can pay $100+ for the best player he's ever had and the best player he ever will have.
If they don't pay Drew by July 16, he is gone. Mark my words. He sits out and leaves. Read his book. It's in there. He's not going to take this, and he shouldn't. If he leaves, they can kiss my $13K a year goodbye, along with a lot of other people's money and good will.

I heard that even the Sports Science people are saying Drew and his "evil agent" are being way too greedy, and that the SS team just might be about to leak information relating to a certain video, yes you heard it right- Archery Targetgate.

This will get done. These type of negotiations always go down to the last minute. I remember last season and the labor dispute. People were saying that there would be no football in 2011 because the union and the owners were so far apart and not talking. A deal was don at the last minute. This deal will get done and Brees will be in training camp.
I hope.

According to the press reports, Drew was asking (and perhaps willing to negotiate down from) the equivalent of Manning's Indy contract in the first three years -- $23 million per year averaged or $69 million total over that period.
efil4stnias 2 minute solution (below) has LESS cap hit than the tag and provides Drew with $73 million over the first 3 years.
Now if the Saints extended the kind of bonus SuperMario is getting, in would have even less of a cap hit over the next few years.

yr 6 who cares...never will see.
first 2 years and signing bonus guaranteed.
So year 1 cap hit ----$15 mill
thats how. ( and I did that in 2 min )

Salary Cap Nonsense

The reason so many of us are not really concerned about it are:
1) Almost any long term contract in the range of what Drew has reportedly asked will cost the Saints LESS cap space than the tag. Only the mathematically challenged have failed to figure that out.
2) Drew would only play one year below the salary he is asking if the cap were applied the next two years, should the NFLPA be right. Every other year would cost the Saints more that the cap, even assuming NO signing bonus for Drew on the long term deal. If the NFLPA is wrong, only 2 years....
3) Plenty of teams that were in the playoffs last year (including the Saints) could afford to pay Drew his asking price if they replaced their current QB salary with Drew's asking salary and made less than a handful of adjustments among non starting player contract... Non-starters.
I am not saying Loomis should not negotiate on price. He should. But his currently reported offer was ridiculously low and Drew says the press reports about it were higher than it was. I don't know whether that is coming from Loomis or Benson, but it may well cost the Saints Drew Brees and any possibility for another championship in the near term.

So are you saying Loomis will look less valuable to the organization if Drew plays and the Saints do well in post-season (because they did well with Loomis sitting out)?

A little birdie told me the Saints and Brees are in agreement with the contract amount- $100m over 5 years. The hold up is Brees wants $75m in the 1st 3 years and the Saints want to spread it out differently. Hear me now, believe me later.

This.
The game of chicken that Loomis and Benson are playing is STUPID. It's a lose-lose proposition. Pay the man. Pay him now. Did we need three free agent linebackers? We were one play from the number one seed last year. Pay Drew first. This is going to get worse by the day. No one else gets signed until Drew is signed. I don't care if you cut defensive starters. They couldn't stop anyone when it counted anyway.

Yes. The team needed free agent linebackers.
