Proration salvation
How does this happen? Signing bonuses are treated in different ways for cash and Cap: (1) for cash purposes, they are treated as fully paid, regardless of deferrals; and (2) for Cap purposes, they are prorated through the life of the contract.
As an example, Charles Johnson of the Panthers received a $30 million signing bonus on a six-year deal. It is treated as $30 million for cash purposes in 2011, yet due to Cap proration of signing bonuses, only $5 million for Cap purposes in each year between 2011 and 2016. Were Johnson to be released or traded prior to 2016, the $5 million of annual Cap charges would accelerate immediately into the then-existing Cap.
In my opinion, however, the less proration the better. I always tried to "pay as you go", preferring high salaries and roster bonuses (not prorated) to contain Cap charges in the year of negotiation rather than building up unamortized charges into the future. More and more teams are trying to get to that consistent approach to roster management.
The proration loophole shows how the NFL Cap has remained "soft" and how teams can easily spend more cash than their Cap number. Which leads to questions about the teams that may not spend their cash or Cap....

Everyone needs to relax, this has been playing out over the media for awhile now, don't expect anything to get done until 1-2 days before he has to decide to sign the franchise tag tender.

He's gone. He's a union man. He's not going to cave. Loomis won't cave, and he'll be gone too. Let the Chase Daniel era begin. I'm out.

Getting Brees his signing bonus this year is not a problem thanks to signing bonuses (what your article talks about). The problem is how do we get Brees his garunteed money next year? All the players we got for dirt cheap this year contract's go way up next year along with many of our in house players. We lose the contracts of only Ellis and Henderson. We are facing a substantial net increase. However, the cap stays the same. So how do you get Brees all his garunteed money with no room to do so?

Man, public opinion is turning against Brees with a quickness
Not saying it's wrong, just making an observation. I can't help but wonder what this board would look like if Brees held out for an entire year. It would get ugly.

What is frustrating to me, Drew, is that you have taken this public and are attempting leverage fan support. I'll tell you what, since you've decided to go public with your disappoinment, go public with your figures. Tell us all how much you are looking for, then we can decide if the Saints are being fair to you or not. Right now, you're playing with us and that is something I don't appreciate.
And let me add that I'm perfectly happy with the Saints paying him gobs and gobs of money.

It doesn't seem to be taking nearly that long.

i dont think people can say its all his agent, Brees isnt dumb. if he was against it he could say i am signing for this amount. the agent works for him, not the other way around. if the saints really did offer the highest contract and he didnt take it then its on Brees, no matter what he says

How is this deal not getting done?! I would think the Saints are starting to lose money on him sitting out and who knows how much they will lose if it never gets done. I don't understand how you "frustrate" the best player to ever play for the Saints!!?

Exactly this. People say "pay him what he wants" but don't realize that Loomis simply can't do that. That's just the reality of having a salary cap, you only have so much to spend.

If Manning's getting 19.2 for 5 years, and if that's higher than Brady, then I'd say give him 19.7 and be done with it. Take it or leave it, you're still the highest paid.

You frustrate the best player ever to play for the Saints by not giving him 22-24 million dollars.
