Edge at 42?

This morning Gil Brandt was talking on Sirius about Jordan Willis the pass rusher from Kansas State. Brandt was very high on Willis, talking about how he's going to be an excellent football player - but he mentioned that he'll probably go high in the second round.

That just got me thinking about scenarios where we are sitting at 42 and haven't taken an edge rusher yet. There are scenarios that could happen, such as McCaffrey-11 and Butler-32, for instance, but there are other scenarios.

Who do you think would be on the board at 42 - and would you be happy with one of those guys being the result of this draft for the edge position? It looks like possibilities include Willis (though his stock is rising) and Tim Williams. But y'all know more than I do about these players.

I just want to be able to think about who to look for if it shakes out that we use 11 and 32 elsewhere.

The sheer depth of the DE/OLB pass rush position is what makes me think we'd be better served not using pick 11 on one unless Solomon Thomas is somehow there.

We may have our choice of 3 or 4 of these guys by the time we get to pick 32 or 42:

Tyus Bowser, T.J. Watt, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Jordan Willis, Charles Harris, Tak McKinley, Malik McDowell, Demarcus Walker. I've even seen some mocks that have Taco Charlton and or Derek Barnett going late in round 1. Tim Williams is also another option - even though I doubt we would take him due to character concerns, someone else may fulfill their pass rush need with him, leaving someone else there for us.

I view this group, outside of the two blue chips that will be gone by pick 11, as all virtually in the same class; none stick out as a cut above all others. We'd get better value at another position early with pick 11.

I like the idea of passing on taking a DE at 11, as long as it's not Thomas.

11. McCaffrey/Hooker/Peppers/Reddick
32. Trade for Butler or draft a CB
42. Willis/Bowser/Watt/Charlton/Harris

I've been looking at it through the lens of trading the 42nd for Butler, but this would make me extremely happy.

If McCaffrey is there at 11 we really need to pull the trigger.
People forget that we got a really good right guard in free agency and our o-line is going to be stout this year (pending the health of armstead). We absolutely need a 3rd down outlet that can make something happen.

But it can't just be a fast WR or a scatback, but someone that can actually pose a threat by running straight up the gut.

People will have to defend McCaffrey the way they did Sproles, you have to respect the run and pass.

Ingram has gotten really good at making plays in the passing game as well and this would completely throw defenses off.

Do these things you mention above and suddenly we have the pieces we need to make some noise this year.

Jordan "Bruce" Willis would be a super selection if we don't get Barnett at 11. Either Barnett or Willis would be powerful DEs, with quick 1st moves who are not only strong against the run, but also can apply QB heat.

I am getting the feeling that we are putting together a D-line very similar in style to the Giants when they were winning SBs: very powerful, stuffed the run up the middle and all, even though there were no JJ Watts or Vonn Millers, could put heat on the QBs.

I think it is very plausible. I do think McCaffrey is in play at 11 so if they take him we will address edge at #32 or #42 depending on which pick we give up for Butler. Willis would be in play though there are other teams, including Atlanta, who like him. Taco Charlton will definitely be in play and could not be in the range that the Saints originally expected him to be. Tyus Bowser and TJ Watt are also guys I think they would look at if they do not address edge at #11. But they do like Reddick.

When I saw the thread title ... my first though was "Edgerrin James isn't 42 years old, is he? But he is too old to kick the tires!"

Agree with McC at 11 and filling CB and edge with next two picks. However, the closer we get to the draft, the higher his stock appears to be rising. Starting to think he won't be there at 11.

I'd trade one of our 3s to jump Carolina for McCaffrey (assuming Lattimore, Hooker, Adams, Thomas, Garrett are all gone).

I saw a draft by Fan Sided Daily yesterday where Solomon Thomas was our pick at #11. That would be the best to happen for us in this draft. I do know that it is not very likely to happen. I do hope that if Thomas is not there that Christian McCaffery will be, and he is our pick.
Who could we target at pick #42 is the question here. My answer is Edge-Tarell Basham. Basham is a big guy, I believe he is 6'4", 277lbs., with 34 1/2" arms. Lots of power with 34 reps at 225lbs. Heck I would take Basham at pick #32, and reserve pick #42 for Malcolm Butler. If Butler does not want to come to our terms, then we pick WR-Chris Godwin at pick #42. That would be best of all draft picks. McCaffery, Basham and Godwin.
There would be excellent talent in the CB arena in round 3. We have a lot of CB talent currently on this team. We didn't have enough CBs last season because of the huge amount of injures to that one position.

What kind of edge pass rushers were available in free agency? Yeah the good ones are going early in the draft.
