The fact that Goodell won't even allow us to hire someone from another team for the job highlights just how unique of a circumstance this is.
This is a temporary coaching job, not a true head coaching hire. This is a caretaker position that Sean Payton, the true head coach, has hand-picked to watch his kids while he's away.

I asked this in another thread but didn't get an answer:
Does anyone know whether the Rule specifies how "legitimate" the interview must be? For example, if we interviewed Dennis Green, this would clearly satisfy the Rule. If we grabbed some random guy literally off the street, that would clearly make a mockery of the rule. What about somewhere in between? Someone like Deuce McAllister, who we clearly would not actually make our Head Coach, but who is at least arguably qualified to a certain degree.
I'm just curious because a lot of people have stated that it will be hard for us to comply with the Rule. If there is no standard on how "legitimate" the interview must be, then it won't be hard at all to comply.

A part of me thinks that Goodell is making the Saints do this just to annoy them.
You can tell that he has something personal against Payton, almost as if they've had a heated argument or something.

Herm Edwards made a mockery of coaching football.

Call up Curtis Johnson, ask him to come accross town for the interview and the rule is satisfied without hurting anyones (Except Herm Edwards) feelings.

I have a friend that looks like Justin Timberlake, I think I'll give him a ring & have him sing 'Cry Me a River' for Herm Edwards.

So what happens when no minority accepts an interview (in any coaching search), is the team not allowed to hire a coach?

Id be curious, from a purely educational stand point, to find out how broad the term minority applies in the Rooney rule. There are a ton of protected groups out there, and im not sure what ones satisfy the interview.
otherwise, i generally get and dont mind the rule. although i do think this is quite the special circumstance to apply it to.

In all fairness, the Saints aren't hiring a new head coach. we are looking for an interim head coach. when oaches are fired and interim coaches take their place, owners and GM don't normally have to interview minority candidates. I understand this is a unique circum stance, but its still an interim coach. We are not looking for a permanent replacement.

I understand the message of the Rooney Rule, but I don't think it has done what the NFL has hoped it would.
Teams are going to have a short list of the candidates they are interested in...and they may or may not include a minority.
If the rule isnt being taken seriously here, it's certainly not the first time.
Saints aren't doing anything wrong in this case. They just want who they want. I think it would be insulting to any minority to go interview for a job in this sort of situation....just to satisfy a rule.
Again, the rule may have good intentions....but not necessarily good results.

Just get Curtis to come in and shoot the breeze for a while. Of course, Florio's indignant column on Curtis' "interview" will be hysterical.

I say the Saints bring in Herm, get him all excited about the job, and then hire Tuna instead. Herm would satisfy the Rooney rule.
