I hope our fifth round pick makes the final 53.
He'll be the only "white" cornerback in the NFL.
But seriously folks, I wonder why there isn't one cornerback in the NFL who isn't an African American. It is pretty amazing if you think about it. African Americans are only 12% of the population. There are approximately 160 cornerbacks in the NFL during the regular season, and every one of them is African American.
I want to stress that I am not proposing a reverse-Rooney rule for the NFL. I don't have a problem with the fact that every NFL cornerback is an African American. I just find it interesting, and I wonder why African Americans happen to be so much better than every other race at the skills required to be successful at this position.

How do we account for this severe under-representation, especially when we remember that over two-thirds of NFL players are African American? How do we explain the fact that Coleman and Roby, who were in the public eye for over 20 years and earned millions of dollars during their long careers, did not entice a whole generation of urban Black kids to aspire to be punters?
Thankfully, the bloggers are all but silent on this issue. No one argues that Caucasians have an anatomical edge in punting a football. No one says that Black men can't kick. No one claims that poverty or oppression has led Whites to take up punting, or that minorities have no access to footballs or fields or coaching or practice time. The knee-jerk responses - genetic advantage, economic necessity, discrimination, lack of access, lack of role models, geography - don't fit this case at all.
