Kevin Faulk, used in a very similiar fashion, hit a wall at 33 years of age.
Sproles will end his current contract at 31 years of age. You could easily see him being productive for another 2-3 seasons after that. Could coincide with Drew Brees' career.
Would be nice if Sproles lasts that long.
Totally different player athletically. Sproles hitting his wall, i.e. losing a step, is still faster/elusive/shiftier/(anything else U want to add) than Faulk in his prime chief. Plus Faulk had a major injury that helped that cause.
Debacle? As great as Drew is, he understands what time it is! This is still a team, and the FO had to look at the bigger picture, as well as Drew! And thats what they did. We had maybe the best vet FA signings under SP, netting as many as 5 new starters on this years team. The tag was done to hold onto Drew while we made these necessary moves.
I'm not denying that, I'm not assigning any blame and I don't doubt Drew will be at Saints HQ within the next 2 weeks, but if your franchise player isn't signed by the end of June... it is most definitely a "debacle".
I often wonder what San Diego fans think about just handing us over all time great players for absolutely nothing. I know I would be livid if it were the other way around.
Good thing you weren't around in the early days, er, years, er, decades of the Saints, then! LOL!

Nothing against Darren (one of my favs even before he became a Saint), but no. LT hit his wall around 31/32. Sproles would be 31 around his contract expiration. Granted, Sproles doesn't have the wear LT did, but I just don't think it's worth extending a RB that old.
