1. To answer your question, it's a good read... (despite the fact that his name is MUD today amongst many Saints fans).
2. Buy the book on E-bay. That way, he won't get an additional royalty.
I could be a hater and say it was garbage. But if you're honest as a Saints' fan, its worth the time to read and a decent book to have in your collection. The thing that makes the book more worthwhile is that it takes many fans back to the days when the Saints were the absolute laughingstock in the NFL. TV comedians and everyone threw the team under the bus and ran over it several times. The Bags to Riches' journey that Duncan walks us through is one you can appreciate as a Saints fan (especially those of us who remember way back with the fight to get the NFL team here). The local politicians were instrumental in having the NFL open the door, and Archbishop Hannon & Dave Dixon will be endeared by this fan base forever.
Talk about the painful early years, the revolving door of head coaches, bad draft picks, the raw deal Hank Stram got, Archie Manning years, the ups & downs of Owid Allen (O.A.) "Bum" Phillips, the Jim "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda" Mora, the genius of Jim Finks, the "Iron Era" of Ditka, Jim Haslett & Aaron Brooks (and all the colorful players over the years)... >>> the heartbreak of Katrina and the devastation of the community>> to the reopening of the Superdome (when many across the country questioned whether or not New Orleans was worth rebuilding) ...>> Sean Payton's rookie year as a coach, the disappointing years in '07 & '08, to the CROWNING SEASON in 2009... gives the true Saints fan a story that is worth revisiting.
BTW: Paper bags were introduced by our lovable (and late) Buddy Diliberto, who showed up to do a sports segment with a paper bag on his head.
Jeff Duncan has burned a lot of bridges with Saints' fans, IMO. But if you want an honest and objective answer about the worth of his book "Bags to Riches," I must give it a thumbs-up "MUST READ" for all Saints fans.
...but get it on e-bay (for reason #2, above).
