Martez Wilson Interview

http://podcast.wwl.com/wwl2/3498004.mp3

Recap:

-Biggest difference in scheme is that Spags uses more 4-down linemen (DEs much more involved), so D-backs and linebackers get to keep their eyes on the QB more in zone coverage.

-Both Spags and GW are aggressive, but GW is loud where as Spags is "laid-back" but straight to the point.

-Transition from LB to DE: Allows him to improve his pass rush possibilities, increases his versatility. Helping him a lot. He was okay with the switch when they approached him, and he loves rushing the passer, so it was a good switch, but he will still play some coverage.

-Big difference from this year to last year - much more confident in his abilities, played in big playoff games, more knowledge.

-Bounty scandal no a distraction to him, but it is to some of the other guys. They all just pray about and are moving forward.

-SB in NO: For us, it's SB or bust. Want to make history. Will let actions speak louder than words. Adds pressure, but they understand how to handle it.

Ya, you have every right to be excited. Out of all the young defenders we've drafted the past 2-3 years, Martez has shown the most development. He possess all the tools and skill to be the defensive menace we've been waiting for. I would like to wager that he'll get between 8 and 10 sacks this season. Any takers?

it is a chance for him to make serious money

Loomis if he looks real good in the preseason, plz sign him long term before we can't afford him

I see people throwing around 8-10 sacks for Wilson as if it compares to 1000 yds or a receiver or 3000 yds for a QB. I don't think people realize just how much 8-10 sacks is for a DE. Especially for a first year DE. I'd be happy with 5.

You just cant learn on the sideline or in the film room. You learn by DOING!

I gotta give GW a lil credit here. He had a rep for being hard on rooks and young players. But last year, he started Cam and P Rob, and players like Junior and Tez got playing time and, most importantly, good experience that they can take with them going into this season.

Junior's been beatin himself about the 7-8 sacks he didnt get last year ( and after watching the tape on him, YES, he shoulda had em! ). But, he learned alot, GAINED CONFIDENCE and along with Spags new scheme, he could very well get double digit sacks this year!

Same goes for Tez. He had alot to learn and Im sure his head was barely swimming most of the year. But by the end of the season, the game finally started slowing down a bit, he got more PT, and GAINED CONFIDENCE (esp after a really good game in the playoffs) that he can play in the NFL! Tez now feels good about his understanding of the game, his reads, his play in coverage, and now looks to perfect his game, and sees playing DE as a way to get better as a passrusher.

But IMO, compared to GW, Spags has a simpler approach and scheme for young players to grasp. He'll also take better advantage of our high scoring O. Those factors combined will get young players on the field quicker, esp against the pass, and allow them to do what they do best while they learn and develop the rest of their game.

Just a theory. But make sure to watch n see how much PT the young players on D get this year compared to past years.

I'm not sure if anybody remembers, but Tez actually started Week 3 vs the Texans he just got injured that game and it set him back a couple weeks. I'm just really excited, not just for Wilson, but for our whole defense. I like the new look.

for some reason i just think this is this guys year. Spags defense that helps the guys up front which in turn help the LB's which in turn help the DB's is better than GW's defense.. But to put Tez in a position like Demarcus Ware will help the Saints unlike any Defense they have had in quite a few years... IM excited

I dont think he is a rush linebacker now, he's being turned into a DE....I was thinking he was going to be a linebacker in the 4-3 who turned into a DE in pass rush situations but that doesnt appear to be the case.

I fear you may be right. That leaves us with Shanle as starting SLB and no one to challenge him for the spot. I swear he's the luckiest linebacker in the NFL. He's only ever had to compete against scrubs and then the one time we bring in someone new who would beat him, he gets moved.

The thing I'm taking away from all the interviews about Spags is, he's a TEACHER.

GW was a more effective motivator ( pay for performance, rah rah, aggressive) than teacher.

Spags will actually teach guys techniques so they can get better as players. Don't know how much more motivation our guys need this year...

With that said, we should see a ridiculous jump in production from The entire defense this year. Look for dominance from our D under Spags... That's all I'm saying.

I'm excited about Tez as a DE! Can't remember the last time we had athleticism like that on the edge.

Hopefully Martez has that all important burst off the line and overwhelming power in his legs/hips. He's already got the speed, length, and instincts to pass rush.
