My Sportsman: Denver Broncos' Peyton Manning - Peter King

My Sportsman: Denver Broncos' Peyton Manning - 2013 Sportsman of the Year - Peter King - SI.com

Let the coronation begin

Quote:
And as I write this, Manning is flying home from New England. His Broncos blew a 24-point lead in Foxboro on a Sunday night and lost to the Patriots 34-31. That made his personal scoreboard with Tom Brady 10-4 in Brady's favor. Manning didn't blow the game, but he didn't win it either, and he had his chances.
Let's forget the blindsided omission from of any mention of Brees here for a moment. How can even consider Manning over Brady. Brady has had scrub WRs most of the year. Brady brought his team back from three TDs. And Manning failed to respond as he has done against Brady so many time in big games. And Brady stuck a dagger in the hearts of one of the 2 best teams in the NFL - us. And Manning has the best set of receivers in the league. Thomas, Thomas and Welker are sick.

I don't dislike King. But Archie must be paying King.

no, King is just the biggest bandwaggon jumper in the sports media, every couple of years he player slobberfest moves from one player to another.

don't expect King to every focus on Brees ever again after Drew came out and told him no one trusts his bousem buddy Goodell.

Manning averaged 4.2 yards per dropback, the worst of his ENTIRE NFL career. And if you count the sack and grounding penalty, he actually averaged 3.2 yards per dropback (122 yards on 38 dropbacks). Outside of the misplayed screen pass by New England that netted 30 yards, the Broncos got 92 yards on the other 37 dropbacks. That is absolutely embarrassing. For a team that ran for 280 yards, and you can't complete a forward pass?

What, did Moreno lose the game for them?

Come on. Get it right. For once.

Drew already won this award. Let Manning have it. Drew will sew up MVP on Monday night.

Manning promised King a few feet of advertising space on his forehead.

might just be "consolation" not "coronation"

If Drew goes to Seattle and plays really well and we win....you could start hearing an upwelling for his consideration as MVP

Exactly. A huge game on national TV. One could easily take the position Manning lost the game through 2nd half ineptitude. And he absolutely did not win the game. Besides stats, I don't know how Manning is used in the same sentence as Brady this year. MVP this year, unless one of the 2 collapses, should be strictly between Brees and Brady - period.

-Demaryius Thomas
- Wes Welker
- Eric Decker
- Julius Thomas - TE

That's a freaking AFC All-Star team. Brady or Brees would pass for 7,000 yards this year with those wide-outs and Moreno at RB.

I'm an Archie fan. I respect Peyton Manning a lot and my favorite is Eli. This is not to run down Payton at all. He is great. But for Brady and Brees not to be the clear cut leaders for MVP with P. Manning's fall-off lately and 2nd half collapse in Boston is nutz.

Guess he got tired of kissing Brady's arse and decided he'd move onto Manning's for a while.

You do realize that Sportsman of the Year (given out by SI) is not the same as MVP, right?

HaHa.

But common Who Dat brother. Brady has 4 SB appearances, 3 victories and does other human type heroics late in the 4th quarter to win big games for over decade. Dislike him or not, his wife is really hot and he's one of the great QB's of all time. That pass he threw to beat us was sick. He had a 4"-6" window to an UDFA who was beautifully covered that had to have perfect loft in the back of the endzone. A perfect Daggar and we are in good company with those.

And if Brees wins 2 more SBs, he will go alongside Montana and Brady as the best 2 modern era QBs to eve play the game. Our boy Brees is good at those daggers also.

Right. And for that matter, Brady has also already won it, after the 2004 season. I think King's point, though not as clearly expressed as it might have been, is that Manning deserves it for his perseverance and the totality of his career. Agree or disagree, but it's no reflection on Drew.

Indeed. The award is supposed to be for the one that "most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement." Drew was a paradigmatic example: someone who made a positive impact both on and off the field. Winners don't always meet those benchmarks (I had particular qualms about LeBron winning last year) but usually the SI editors do try.
