Payton's Contract
Does anyone know how the suspension affects Payton's contract?
If he had 4 years left before the bountygate broke, when he comes back next year is the contract down to 3 years or does it stay at 4?

Not sure on how a full season suspension affects a coaches contract, however for players that retire or hold out while under contract it can be put in a suspended status. I heard Kirwin talk about that the other day said they call it tolling in the CBA. He mentioned that Tampa did this with Jake Plummer a few years ago when he refused to report after being traded from Denver.

I would imagine, that no matter what, a measure will be taken to make sure Payton is here through Brees' tenure.

I think SP will be here as long as he wants to be here.....he will get extensions until he decides he wants to move on.

BlueDogMan is right. This year does not count. Payton is not paid for this year, so his contract goes back in effect upon his reinstatement.
For example, if he had five years left on his contract when he was suspended, he still has five years left when he is reinstated in February 2013.

Thanks,
I thought that it wouldn't count but I wasn't sure.

Payton made this franchise successful and if i were Benson, I would let him stay for as long as he likes

I would assume that his contract ends on a specific date and is not expressed in a number of years.
Going by that, the suspension wouldn't push his contract back a year.

I guess it would be a case by case bases for coaches since they have no CBA. It would come down to the actual wording. Are salaries set for specific years (ex: 4.5 mil for 2014) or are salaries set out for the next consecutive year.
I am sure all coach contracts look very similar but since this is uncharted waters it is a very good question.
