Saints debate on First Take
Stephen A Smith says Saints are a minimum of 10-11 win team. Doesn't expect a big drop-off in offense without SP, due to Brees' long-term relationship with Carmichael. Defense will be better with Spags. Believes team will be extra motivated due to bounty drama.
Skip, of course, says Saints will struggle. Cites Eric Mangini's categorizing of Brees as a QB who sometimes tries to hard to make things happen, like Favre and Romo. Pressure of not having SP + his big contract will cause him to try too hard and end up with a larger number of interceptions. Cites TB "losing the game for the Saints" at Tampa last year. LOL, says defense will be worse than last year because no Vilma.

If you cite Eric Mangini as proof of anything you automatically lose the debate by default. It's in the constitution.

Defense will be worse because no Vilma? Really Skip? Vilma didn't have that huge of an impact last season. Besides, Lofton is probably better than Vilma at this point in their careers. Defense will also have a better scheme with Spags coaching.

For further comic relief, Skip just said Patriots will go 15-1 in the regular season, losing only to Tebow and the Jets, and then go on to win the Super Bowl

Of course they will. Skip drinks at the alter of Brady and the Pats.
Sorry, but there's no logical way to argue our defense won't be better this year. The player moves alone have vastly improved our talent. We know Spags can coach.
I mean, maybe we will be because anything can happen, but to argue it on paper before the season is stupid.

Mangini's characterization is off because unlike Favre or Romo, Brees isn't going to throw the end of game interception for fumble that kills your teams chances to win the way those to will. That's when they make their mistakes because of the pressure. Brees has ice water in his veins during those situations.
But I do hope that Brees doesn't feel the pressure to "prove" that's he's worth the money the Saints paid. I hope he doesn't feel like he has to "prove" anything to the fan base or the owners. Or feel that he has to make the perfect play/decision every time he touches the ball because we need him to be perfect because we don't have Payton. Because then I think we can see uncharacteristic mistakes from him that can hinder our chances at winning.
In other words, hopefully he'll just prepare the way he normally prepares and play the way he normally plays. If he trust the people around him then everything thing will be just fine and we will be an offensive machine again.

Before they start the show, a coin is flipped to see what side they will each take on that day's topics.

Why does Romo even get mentioned with Brees, even if negatively.

I've thought for the longest time, (and I will probably get flamed for this) that Lofton was better than Vilma. The one edge that Vilma has is smarts, but it is a very small edge because Lofton is no idiot on the field. All Lofton has done since entering this league is make tackles and big hits and he has progressively gotten better at pass coverage each season. Mark my words, Lofton will be a pro-bowl player this year under Spags' system.
If there is one player on this defense that I am most sure about as a playmaker, it is Lofton. I believe he will make a believer out of the rest of the Who-Dat Nation as well.

So the Saints defense have how many new players this year and at the same time the defense is learning a new system? There are alot of posters on this board that are confident that this defense will help the Saints win 12 or more games!!!!!
I, personally will wait for judgement and have to see the defense improvement first. How many times in the past did we think the defense would take the next step?

If anything, I think the offense will help them win those 12 games. I just think the defense will be better than last years defense. It really can't get much worse.
