Post Saints' Ken Crawley had to stop panicking before he could succeed

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

There was never an issue with Ken Crawley’s ability to cover players last year.

The New Orleans Saints cornerback, then a rookie, could stay in phase with most wide receivers and shadow them as well as anyone. His issues often came at the top of routes when the ball was coming in. Instead of trusting his instincts, locating the ball and making a play, he’d often start to panic and give up a reception on an otherwise well-covered route.

There were a few examples of this from last season, with the most damaging probably coming in Week 2 against the New York Giants when he let what looked like a game-sealing interception turn into a game-winning touchdown. But through two games this season, it looks like Crawley has solved the issue.

“I think he’s done a better job of finishing plays," secondary coach Aaron Glenn said. "You saw it in training camp last year, he was finishing some plays last year, but he never got a chance to do it in games. I think he understands how to do it in games, and how to put himself in position to finish those plays in games. That’s been a huge deal for him coming into this year. He worked his butt off on it this offseason.”

Somehow corner has become one of our strongest and deepest positions. This will continue to set up the d-line and safeties to make plays. Another note, we are the 2nd best fantasy D over the last 2 weeks. Yes, the New Orleans saints.

That's why you want to give corners time to develop, it is SO unforgiving and technically demanding. Gotta respect anyone who can excel at that, let alone someone thrust into it the way he has.

At a point it's about confidence. It's how some rookies like Marcus Peters can come in right away and be really good. They know they're good and will prove it. So they don't second guess their eyes or hesitate.

I had forgotten, or never knew actually, that he was a highly prospect in HS, had committed to Tennessee, etc. Changed his mind after Dooley was fired and chose Colorado because two of his HS teammates and friends were going there.

Good point about confidence, but Peters is not really a great example. Yes, he made a lot of INTs as a rookie, but also gave up a lot of TDs. Those picks were behind a dominant pass rush. Just goes to show though... CB is up there with QB as far as learning curve goes. Game experience is required to master it.

If you can get quality players after round 7, that tells us that 5th,6th,and 7th round choices should be collected and kept in our pocket. Would love to get 8-9 choices a year instead of 5 or 6.
