SR.COM "Official" Mock Draft 5th round New Orleans Poll...
Here are the choices for the Saints 5th round selection. The poll will be open for four hours, or until an overwhelming favorite emerges, whichever is shorter. There will be no runoff; a simple majority wins, so vote for who you really want, as they could end up winning by one vote. The previous selections for New Orleans have been Casey Hayward (cornerback, Vanderbilt) and Joe Adams (wide reciever, Arkansas).
The choices for the fifth round selection:
Marcus Forston, Miami, DT
Matt McCants, OT, UAB
Brandon Hardin, FS, Oregon State
Oliver Vernon, DE Miami
Deangelo Peterson, TE, LSU

I voted Forston. It was between him and Brewster, but I think Matt Tennant will be given additional time to develop. DT, is a position in need of some depth. Besides according to most prospect rankings Forston is a late 3rd Rd to early 4th Rd pick. So, there is value to be had there.

These were my choices, and I'll expound a bit on the process.
-Fortson and Vernon both represent high reward players, which the Saints typically go after in later rounds. Either due to injury or other factors, a player who has the talent to be a first rounder is a nice risk to take. With Steve Spagnuolo here, either one of these players will have a chance to realize the potential they posses and become solid contributors.
-Hardin was a much higher rated prospect prior to injury. He ran a 4.36 forty at his pro day, showing his athleticism. Could be a solid special teams player, and could help out earlier than we may think in the defensive backfield as a dime contributor or even as a sub at free safety.
-McCants; well, does anyone feel particularly settled long term at either of our tackle positions? Raw and talented, he could be a great addition this late in the draft.
-Deangelo Peterson, was a later addition to this poll, but is a good player and could be a hometown favorite.

Well since in this draft the Saints took a corner and a receiver in the previous rounds, I vote for the DT. I would have probably looked for DT in the 3rd round myself.

Michael Brewster is the best player listed, but wasn't he taken by Tennessee at 117?

OK, would the seven peolpe who voted for Brewster please select another option. I am really sorry. I did a search, but must've missed him. I did think he was quite the steal here...
I added Deangelo Peterson in Brewster's place.

I voted Peterson since he was would be considered a high value choice this late in the draft. Likelihood is he is gone by the end of the 4th round with a chance at going in the 3rd.

Thanks. I'm trying. It would not be possible to conduct this draft without the help of some extremely attentive GMs, and Rugger and Mamba giving me some much needed support.

I am not a fan of Deangelo Peterson. He has done nothing at LSU to show he will be productive in the NFL. Say all you want about LSU's weak QB talent, but a quality tight-end is a weak QBs best friend and Deangelo Peterson did nothing. He rounds off his routes and he drops half the passes thrown to him, yet folks ignore his tape and look at his "measurables". Peterson has 45 games played at LSU with 38 catches for 452 total yards and 3 TDs. So he averages 10 yards a game and a TD a season. Not only that, but Peterson is a crappy blocker. He is undersized and doesn't have the frame to add more muscle.
Perhaps I will be forced to bite my tongue if the Saints select Peterson, much as I bit my tongue when we traded up for Al Woods.

Then select another TE, there are several 3-4th round TE prospects in most prospect player rankings. I'm a big LSU fan, homerism aside, a solid backup to Jimmy Graham is still a need. We lost a powerful part of our offense when Graham suffered his ankle sprain last season. Not only do we need a second TE, but I would prefer for that position to contribute, ala the Patriots. Color me crazy, but now is as good a time as any to grab one. Just my .02.
