Just got off the phone with Directv. I just asked for a CSR. She was very helpful and informative about what they could do. I got the Regular Sunday Ticket for $150 but because of the Viacom problem I was able to get $30 off for the first 3 mos and $15 off for the following 3 mos for a total off of $135 plus I got an additional HD receiver for another bedroom for $49, which is $50 off the regular price. So by being polite and upfront with them I got $185 in discounts AND got another reciever! This is why Directv constantly does well in the J.D. Power customer satisfaction surveys.
Finally got a deal done with the 3rd call. And this is with me having a year left on my contract:
ST MAX for free (At first they just offered ST, so I just asked for the max - her response, "If that's what it will take to keep you, we'll do it). Various discounts that will lower my bill about $15 / month for a year. No extension of my contract.
Ok, talking to Direct TV for their Choice Extra package and Sunday Ticket comes for free this time around. I am switching from Time Warner to them. Time Warner for me is $85 a month and Direct TV would be $61 a month and that includes Sunday Ticket for the 2012 season and it is upgraded to Max also. Of course, this includes HBO, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax. After 3 months it goes to $107 per month. I will probably just cancel the movie channels anyway. What do you guys and gals think?

You shouldn't have to pay anything for the HD reciever, you are only leasing it. I cant remember the last time i paid anything for a directv reciever.
might want to call back and see if they can give that to you for free.

It's probably an installation fee. From my experience even if you upgrade a std recvr to HD, someone still has to come out even if no additional cabling is required. The tech told me it was stupid, but he had to call a number to have the recvr activated.
I've only been a customer for a year, still have a year left on my contract and the guy on the phone was just throwing offers at me. Ended up with free whole home DVR for 12 months ($11/mo), + $10/mo off for 3 months for the Viacom fiasco, + $10/mo off for 24 months (not sure what this discount was for). Plus got Sunday Ticket + Red Zone for FREE. Needless to say I'm a happy camper!
I went the 'cancel' route through the phone system and got right in touch with the 'cancellation department'. The guy was nice as could be.
He also offered to upgrade our equipment for free but we'd have to re-up the contract which I told him 'no thanks'
I figure this is at least $600 in savings over 2 years, figuring the Sunday Ticket + Red Zone is worth at least $200

I recently upgraded my reciever to a 3D reciever, they just mailed it to me, i had to mail my old one back. during setup the number to call came up on the screen.
I already had HD so you may be right about going from standard def. to HD.
I would still try to get that charge knocked down some more, because you are "renting" the box and have to pay a monthly fee for it anyways.
Thanks for the thread guys. Called and spoke with retention. Took the polite route and stated that I don't watch tv that much anymore and miss half the games when I go to the dome. By the time I get home the second game is over. Mentioned that several got discounts because of the Viacom situation although it's been settled. Been having directv for eight years and have no contract.
Got the NFL ticket with the redzone and iphone app for free. $10.00 off for three months and 6 months of STARZ and Encore for free without reupping another contract.
One thing that I found interesting if any of you also have cable or uverse , you can suspend your services for up to six months and pay zero when you aren't using it.
Disappointed with the person I got in contact with this morning. She offered $20 off per month of Sunday Ticket Max, or $10 off on Sunday ticket, but no matter which angle I player, she wouldn't give it to me for free.
I may call back and try to talk to a guy who may be more receptive.
Anyone else run into any resistance trying to get it for free? (I've got 1 yr left on my contract).
I called and re-upped for a year and got Sunday ticket for free. Upgraded HD DVR, 3 HD receivers, whole-home DVR, $10 off for a year, premium channels free for 3 months, free hd for a year. The rep also told me to call back in 3 months and if there are any other offers they can add those on too.
When I called I went straight to the cancellation option and told them that DISH was there trying to sell me on their hopper package (which they really were) and after that the rep just started telling me what he could do for me.
Wanted to switch to uverse, but i keep reading how bad the picture quality is compared to directv, would have liked to have just gotten the red zone channel thru uverse for $5 a month.
I'm now with uverse. Is that $5 month for 12 months or $5 month only during football season?
