Why are the Pats trading Butler? (Speculation - but right on the money)

Because they want a younger, cheaper and better option.

That's it!

Just say no to giving up a 1st rounder.

So who is there younger, cheaper, better option?
Gilmore had a down year. They have paid him on projection of his skill set fit to their system. Still not going to get a better corner opposite him for 3.9 million this year

But going by just this logic, the Browns would be awesome. It's not that simple.

Fun fact(s)...

Stephon Gilmore (Link)
Position: CB
6-0, 190lb (183cm, 86kg)
Born: September 19, 1990 (Age: 26-182d) in Rock Hill, SC
Experience: 5 years

Malcolm Butler (Link)
Position: CB
5-11, 190lb (180cm, 86kg)
Born: March 2, 1990 (Age: 27-018d) in Vicksburg, MS
Experience: 3 years

So if you're scoring...

- Butler is all of 5 months and 17 days older than Gilmore
- Gilmore has 2 more years of NFL experience than Butler (2 years of physical pounding)
- Butler played in 11 games his rookie year (not due to injury) and has started every game since
- Gilmore has missed 12 games over his career due o injury

Butler's accomplishments
2016 2nd Team All-NFL Associated Press
2015 Pro Bowler

Gilmore's Accomplishments
2015 Pro Bowler (Alternate)

The Pats just want to be able to pay a Cb AND get a pick back in the process. (As opposed to just paying a CB)

Clearly...the Pats felt Gilmore was better than Butler...or at the least would be less of a headache. Otherwise...it doesn't make any sense at all. Saints fans supporting the Butler trade want to deny this simple logic. You can convince me that Butler is better than we already have...but please don't deny that the Patriots aren't trying to sell high on the guy.

Before every acquisition you should ask yourself WWBD...what would Belichick do? Apparently...in this particular situation, Belichick will buy low on Brandin Cooks, and sell high on Malcolm Butler. Otherwise, why would he do what he does? He hasn't become the greatest coach in NFL history for being a nice guy.

This is essentially what the Saints did in signing Ginn and trading Cooks. We're not so dumb either. We got a 1st round pick and saved $$ long term as well.

Butler can't cover downfield, he also can't cover big receivers. The Falcons took advantage of this in the SB until they choked. The falcons exposed the patriots defense. Gilmore gives them more flexibility because he can cover downfield without safety help and he can cover big receivers. Why pay for a guy who is a liability against your biggest rival?

Edit: also the draft is deep at corner, we can find a corner who can play at the same level of Butler: he might need safety help but he'll hold his own on most plays.

How's Gilmore gonna cover anybody from the trainer's room?

And in response to the edit, are we really gonna act like any CB we draft is gonna enter the league and play at the same level as Butler for the first 2-3 years?
