WHO DAT, Saints fans! Saints used the franchise tag on Drew Brees last off-season,before reaching a settlement for his multi-year contract, and reportedly will not tag Jermon Bushrod. Looks like Mickey Loomis and the Saints management may not tag any player this year.
The only player that worth the tag is Bushrod. But with the OT depth in the draft and about 10 starting tackles ready to hit FA there's no point. Bushrod and his agent will sign a deal before free agency if the saints even offer one. They know it's unlikely he'll get offered big money.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but people who seriously think the Saints should tag someone are aware there is this little problem called the salary cap, right? The Saints will not use the franchise tag this season because it would tie up too much money on the cap. They might use the transition tag, which allows them a right of first refusal if a team offers the transitioned player a contract. The "poison pills" of those contracts were outlawed, so that's no longer a problem. But those of you hoping Bushrod or anyone else gets the franchise tag need to wake up. It's a nice dream, but that's all it is.
