'Leaper' play, a costly one for Saints, could be banned by NFL next season

One of the Saints’ toughest losses last year came against the Denver Broncos.

It looked like New Orleans had the game sewn up with a little more than a minute remaining when Denver’s Justin Simmons leaped over the line, blocked the extra-point attempt and Will Parks ran it back for two points. The Broncos won, 25-23.

But that play might be deemed illegal next season if the proposed rule change passes at next week’s league meetings. For the rule to come into effect, 24 teams would need to vote in favor of it.

Vice president of officiating Dean Blandino explained during a conference call with reporters that players could be put at risk depending on where and how they land.

"The issue, we've looked at a lot of tape on the jumper, is how it's being defended at this point; whether it's the snapper or the guard raising up and attempting to make contact with the jump...
