I rooted for Deniro in Heat and Hugh Jackman in the Prestige. ****** at both endings.

caveat to # 3 (the technology one) - except when they're kids
often the "good guy" kids are more technologically advanced than the adults
WarGames, et al

So showing Russel Crowe with a dog in Gladiator tricks me into rooting for him, but all the promotional material about a movie called Gladiator starring RUSSEL CROWE left me clueless about who the star is, and therefore, which character I should be rooting for? It wasn't called The Huns starring Random Hollywood Extras, or Emperor starring Joaquin Phoenix. Glad they put that dog in the beginning of the movie, or I might never have guessed the hero is the guy who comes home from war and finds his family brutally murdered.

Somewhat relevant... but the few times I've watched 1,000 ways to die, I notice they do the opposite.
They always make the victim act like a ***** so that you don't feel sorry for them for dying.

# 3 Make them American even if they're not...? Seeing those three example movies, the last thing I thought about was those guys being American......

I don't ever really find myself rooting for anyone when I watch flicks. I do get tired of dumb bad guys who talk too much. They'll have the hero at their weakest, and instead of whacking them, they deliver a state of the union style speech that gives the hero enough time to get free and either escape, catch the bad guy, or kill the bad guy.
Hey idiot, get rid of the hero while he or she is weak, and then give your speech.. To their corpse.

but it's a list/talking point that would included just flipping around the dial and landing on a movie and knowing the 'score' without the aid of an advertising campaign
