It was actually created because they had to come up with an idea to sell a toyline they'd already put into production. It originally started out as a tie-in for the Conan the Barbarian film, but when they saw the movie they realized that it was pretty solidly R in the nudity, sex, and violence department and that making a toy line targeted to kids would be controversial. The line was already in pre-production, but to save face they changed the name to He-Man and painted the hair blonde instead of black (he has the same haircut as the Frank Frazaetta paintings of Conan). Realizing that nobody would buy an action figure of a foppish body builder with a silly name and bad haircut on its own, the took a "throw **** to the wall and see what sticks" approach to designing more characters and put their marketing muscle behind a cartoon.

I am ashamed that I once watched He-man. Yeah, don't think I'll be doing THAT again...well, until I see some awesome trailor and buy into the hype machine...and then blame the fact that I am going to watch it on my 7 year old daughter...

Transformers and He-Man were my two favorite cartoons growing up. I had almost all the actions figures (wish I still did cause they'd probably be worth something). The He-Man movie was horrendous though. Even as a child I thought it was stupid. Depending on who they cast and what the pre-views look like I may go see it but I don't get around to seeing many movies I really want to see so I doubt it. More than likely will watch it when it makes it to TV.

same here. i had every single He-Man toy released up until Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out, and then all of my allowance and birthday/christmas wish lists were devoted to the Turtles. i brought a dishwasher sized box full of He-Man to my grandmother's where they slowly got lost/broken/went home with my cousins.

The He-Man movie was awesome.
It was everything that was great about the 80s...
Remember when your stupid hobby or talent could save the world?
Some guy from Earth is in a cheesy techno band. His mad skillz on the casio allow him to figure out the key chimes required for inter-dimensional space travel.
Plus, Skeletor was a total ******.
*****Disclaimer*****
I haven't actually watched this movie in years. My memory may be a little biased.
But still, I'm sure it's great.

They used to show it on TBS all the time way back when. All I remember was the little dwarf guy (Orko's replacement, for all intents and purposes) using his tools to steal BBQ ribs from people.
And then Teela being disgusted that they eat meat on Earth. Man-At-Arms chowed down, though.

The only good things about the movie were Teela and a young Courtney Cox. I don't understand why they brought all the characters to earth in the first place, I don't remember and cartoons where they came to earth.

Budget reasons, probably. Easier to film Earth scenes that spending money to built all the sets necessary for a full story in Eternia.
In the series He-Man/Prince Adam's mom was actually an astronaut from Earth who crash landed on Eternia, but I don't think they ever actually went to Earth.
