Only in New Orleans: New Borders Bookstore in an Old Funeral Home
i noticed this the last time i was home and thought it looked cool, though i had forgotten that it used to be a funeral home:
Borders shoppers find life and death the book store aisles
I was having a conversation with an old friend this week about a book that is enjoying current popularity and she said to me: "I'll have to go to the funeral parlor and get a copy."
Now there's something you don't hear every day.
Then again, they don't put bookstores in funeral homes just anywhere. In fact, if you Google the phrase "bookstore in a funeral home," there's only one and that's the one in the former House of Bultman on St. Charles Avenue. Established 1883. Generations ago.
Now it's Borders.

We have a Mongolian Grill restaurant in what used to be a crematorium, I know people who have sworn to never eat there.

There is a Barnes and Noble at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore that is in the old power plant. Here's a pic of the outside:
The stacks still run all the way through the building and into the store, which you can see on the right side of the below picture. They cut entry ways into them so that customers can walk through them while shopping.

that's pretty sweet... used to be that big-box bookstores were in regular buildings, but now it seems like a competition to see who can be the most unique-- not a bad thing.

In Chalmette they have a Funeral home where a Panchos used to be and a College Office where a funeral home used to be. I actually had to pay fees in the same room that my grandfathers wake was in. Kind of weird.

I think the joke lies in this part:

I heard the one on Veteran's is closing. Doesn't make sense to build a new one if they are closing an existing one.

do you mean the Bookstop (owned by B&N) on Shepherd & W. Alabama? that's funny, i live literally right behind it... i think it used to be 'Bookstar', but i just poked my head out my front door to double check and the sign on the back says Bookstop....

IIRC, the house used to belong to the actress, Kitty Carlisle's, family before it was a funeral home.
