I guess I could simply use the 18-55mm that came in the kit and set it at 35mm and move around and take shots and then do the same thing at 50MM to get an idea of what I like better?

Remember that the 50 you're looking at is effectively a 75 on your camera.

Anyways, Russ you gave some good advice. Basically it's all about what you shoot. Either way I think every beginner should have a 50mm lens in their arsenal. It's sharp, lightweight, and even on a cropped body it gives interesting photos. But then again I like my photos to be closer to the subject I'm shooting

You also lose the vignetting that can occur on longer lenses by using a crop body. It's win/win in a lot of cases.

OOOPS. You are correct. There goes that idea. Well for what I am going to shoot, should I go with the 35mm, which will become 52 on my camera, or the 50mm, which will become 75mm on my camera?

The focal length on the lens with your camera is measured on a DX sensor, so 18-55 is really 18-55.
The 35mm focal length on the lens you're looking at is also measured on a DX sensor, so 35 is really 35.
The 50mm focal length on the other lens you're looking at is measured on a frame of 35mm film, so a DX sensor effectively is a 1.5x factor crop, so that lens is effectively a 75mm lens.
Basically, the 50mm you're looking at has an effective focal length that's 20mm longer than your kit lens.

Russ,
I am confused. Everywhere I read says the 35mm lens that I am looking at will be about 53mm on my DX camera?
Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX
For as little as I know, it seems to me like 53mm would be better than 75mm for my type of shooting correct?

I'm jumping right in the middle of your conversation but why not get multiple lenses? It may not be feasible but I have the 18-55mm Canon and a Tamron 70-300mm. They both do what I want and the Tamron was about $160. Only thing I'm missing is a fisheye.

Ahhh, the quandary of figuring out what lenses to start off with. I know this all too well.
If it really wrecks your brain, just borrow some lenses first to see what you like.
borrowlenses.com & lensrentals.com are good

How much $$$ are you looking to spend? That's another important part of figuring out what to buy.

That is a very good point, and eventually I probably will have multiple, but I am trying to stay on budget and start with one more lens that will cover what I think I will be shooting mostly in the beginning.
I picked the 2 lenses I am debating between 1st because they are supposed to be great in low light because of the f/1.8 aperture and they are only about $200.
The kit lens I have is an f/3.5 aperture.
I would like to be able to take as many pictures as I can using natural light.

Yea, I'm confused too. Disregard what I said about focal lengths. I'm Nikon-********.

i don't really do any photography, outside of the pics i sometimes take with my phone, lol.. But this might be my favorite pic i've ever taken, snapped with my little Fujifilm digital camera while riding down Canal St. in the rain a couple days after the SB.. It has taken on a little more meaning for me with the events of this offseason.
