The answer is obviously the Ford Pinto. For those maybe to young to know about them - these cars would explode in flames when they got hit from behind. The ruptured gas tank would spew napalm all over the occupants. Ford knew about the design flaw and decided to sell them anyway. They figured out that it was cheaper to pay off the victims of their death traps instead of fixing them and making them safe beforehand. True story.
All that could be said the same for a few other Fords: Some 1st gen mustangs and cougars...the top of their gas tanks was the floor of the trunk .Also some 90's LTDs and mustangs had the rear collision/tank exploding problem, made the news for a couple unfortunate souls.
The Aztec was god-awful looking - I never drove/rode in one to know what they were really like. But thinking about it, I can't help wondering if it was just slightly ahead of it's time. Now all manufacturers have a cross-over/sport wagon and I don't recall there being many of them back around the time of the Aztec.
Was that a case of great, forward thinking idea ruined by bad execution? Happens all the time in the car industry.

That's the most generous thing I've ever heard said about an Aztec.

This is a great thread. So many cars to choose from. I never had any of the best bad cars like the Pinto, Pacer, or Citation, so I it's hard for me to nominate them as best. But I can vote with confidence that anything made by Dodge in the '80's was utter garbage. But ultimately I have to go with the Ford Granada. When I was in the middle of a test drive to sell it the suspension just crumbled away and the body dropped down onto the tires. Nothing about that car worked. Although it never exploded on me...

.
Their list http://www.insideline.com/features/1...-all-time.html
doesn't contain just american car companies, but cars sold in america. I know the OP said worst american car, but the bottom link on the post lists 100 cars sold in america from manufacturers around the world, and how the Brat isn't top 5 I don't know. They also didn't list the el camino or ford ranchero, so apparently the author has an affinity for C-rucks... or T-ars.

I'll take one of each.

Fair enough. The El Camino and Ranchero are arguably still desirable/collectible cars, though.
My brother got one of the first Citations with the V6 as a company car. He drove it all around the gulf coast loaded down with gear to service radio towers.
He drove it like the skanks he picked up in the middle of nowhere bars he frequented. Last I remember it had over 250,000 miles and was still running strong.
