Wow, you guys are some harsh critics. I thought the movie was great. I'm a sucker for prequel type movies though. I love movies that make me think. It was so good, that I went back and watched Alien again this weekend.
I did have one question though - What was the point of the beginning where the engineer drank something then broke apart and fell into the river?

Ah, should've kept reading. Great theory!

But I think - and I hope - that this is a branching of the franchise, that will lead to maybe another trilogy further exploring the creator/created concept. The one survivor is the human who sympathized with the creators and, I think, would represent that part of humanity that would willingly join the selfless creation religion (if that's the right word for it).

Yeah, it felt like more of a spin-off than a prequel to me. The spin-off being this being the story of the Space Jockeys.

I'm sure it'll be some cheesy "because we're destroying our planet"-type reason.

This is a pretty good read. It basically theorizes that Jesus was one of the engineers, and that's why something happened which causes the Engineers to suddenly turn on us approximately 2,000 years ago.
cavalorn: Prometheus Unbound: What The Movie Was Actually About
After reading this, I think this may be a very strong hint as to why Shaw wearing the cross around her neck was so focused on during the movie but not really explained any further. It could be a big foreshadow.

Yeah I think he has some interesting points. I still think RS's interview was so ambiguous, that he could end up denying the whole connection and say that it may have been an idea but it was scrapped.
I do think his theory is weak in describing how the engineers on the ship were killed, but definitely plausible.
I guess we'll have to find out more with the sequel, but a great read if anyone hasn't read it and is looking for an interesting theory.
