The 3D was not done in a cliche fashion, instead it added richness and depth to the visuals, which were indeed great.
The plot was entertaining enough, but nothing in the story being told offered any depth where you said, man I need to watch the again right now.
Spoilers.........
One big issue in the movie was why the heck did David feed the Dr. that crap that made him sick and transform and in turn make the female doctor a host for that squid looking thing? I mean this insert into the plot drove half the story!
I think he prepped that concoction during the two years in space. It plays into the whole created/creator mental/philosophical process that David and also various humans pondered upon. First there was the scene where the female doctor got emotional when she spoke of not being able to "create life." But then later she does, but in reality its a created robot that actually created life. I don't think any of his acts were at the direction of the old man, but part of his own interest feeling like a creator, and trying to gain a deeper understanding and explore what it means to feel apart of the creator/created context.

If you can, do yourself a favor and see this in Imax. Totally worth it.
Here's a review of sorts that I found that puts forth some interesting ideas about the underlying themes of the movie.
The only thing I didn't like about it was the pacing. Everything happened so fast it seems. I don't know if that was the movie itself or if that fact that I was so pumped up for this movie haha. I'll definitely be going to see this again this week. And again after that. And maybe one more time.

Wait for DVD. Not gonna say it sucked, it was okay, but it's nothing I have any desire or need to see again (I'd give it a solid "C"). Most of the comments so far are spot on -- it's pretty to look at but you never really care about the characters. I'm expecting it'll have a good opening weekend based on the hype and a huge week 2 box office drop off based on word of mouth. It's not terrible, but if you haven't seen it you really aren't missing anything.

i still dont understand why he put the stuff in the drink either, only thing I can think is that he was just seeing what it would do. Maybe if it had some healing powers he would have given it to waylen

They showed David opening up one of the cannisters, within which were several vials of liquid. He broke one open and made the "big things have small beginnings" comment, or whatever it was he said. The next scene he was talking with Holloway and the conversation turned to why did people make robots like David. Holloway's answer was "because we could," at which point David reached for the glass of champagne and dropped the specimen in it.
I think he did it on his own just to see what would happen "because he could," but it's possible he could have been acting on orders.

Why did they make the squid/human baby so large so fast? The squid doesn't get that big when it is just alien genetics? I doubt the genetics of the human made it that big.
The whole quarantine and protocol of the ship was disastrous. No wonder they failed so quickly....
You have that kind of technology, yet can't handle simple quarantine protocol. People were just running around anywhere and everywhere. That made the movie dumb.

i paid close attention to his finger the entire scene. if he just did it because he had an idea, then he probably wouldve just put it in the glass immediately.
instead, he kept it on his finger the entire time they talked, and waited until the scientist said he would do anything to have the answers. then, at that point, he infected his drink.
there is the possibility that he had been programmed to bring back specimens (especially when he tried to get Shaw to go into cryo while she was pregnant with an alien), but it seemed to me that if he was programmed to bring back a specimen that he basically gave Halloway the choice, even if it was a drunken choice and the questions were very cryptic.
i actually found the dialog of that scene to be the most powerful of the entire movie.

I think it is instinctual to run directly away. I had a friend that worked corner crew at road races and he told me that part of their indoctrination was about running away from things angled away instead of directly away which is what most people do and get run down by the car, motorcycle,wheel,...giant space ship.

I read that before I saw it and I have to say I didn't see most of the correlations made by the blogger.
I think the movie was fine with the knowledge that a sequel will probably follow ( as a stand alone movie, not so good.) It answered some questions and raised more that will probably be answered in the follow up film(s.)
I can see the Engineers as being the basis of the Greek gods ,the Titans not the Olympians, as well as other deities from other cultures.
As to the characters not being fleshed out maybe it wasn't deemed necessary because they didn't live through it (with the exception of David and Shaw) and their inclusion was to advance the story some of which may have more meaning in the follow on film(s.)
The two characters that remain are a cold calculating android and a foreign woman both difficult for me to relate to and get behind.
It will be interesting to see if a directors cut will be offered when it comes out of disc.

What was with the piles of dead engineers near the big door on the ship? Also, the biologist (Milburn) basically saying "Here, kitty, kitty" to the alien worm/snake/lamprey creature was reeeeeediculous. Finally, how did Fifield become a zombie with superhuman powers?
This was one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen (saw it in IMAX 3D), but it was definitely a letdown otherwise.
