I loved Purple Rain. I guess because I loved the album way before I saw the movie. When music connects to a time in your life and your heart, well, it just connects. No excuses.
What was so "bad" about it? Typical corniness of many early 80s movies yes, but this was basically a musical with some good music in it. The solo on Purple Rain itself played out at the end of the movie would mean not bad...yes?
Ah yes, Apollonia purified in the waters of Lake Minnetonka (or not).
I thought Purple Rain was a pretty good flick then and I still do. Yeah, it's ham-acted in places but Prince himself was charismatic, Morris and Jerome were funny, at least some of the plot was involving (his relationship with his dad, at least). And of course the music made one of the very best albums of the 'eighties (although IMHO Prince's 1999 is even better). Given the generally low quality of rock-musical movies, this one's pretty far up there.
Let me introduce you to the REAL best worst movie of all-time!
too campy/self-conscious to be considered "bad"
now let's be clear - i LOVE purple rain
could watch it anywhere anytime
but prince's acting, apollonia's acting, the writing, the prince/wendy/lisa scenes, the club owner
really prince's dad and morris day are the only one's who can carry scenes
but of course it's one of the great movie musicals of all time
