Can anybody explain that ruling on the backward lateral by Pittsburgh?

I don't get it.

The ref said that Denver would not challenge the play because it would have resulted in an incomplete pass for a 1 yard loss. Phil Simms explained it that way for sure.

The explanation by the official was totally bizarre and made absolutely no sense.

Unless I misheard him.

That play should have been reviewed and should have been determined that yes it was a backward lateral and yes that Denver would have recovered it cleanly had the whistle not blown.

Which was the case.

Sad that refs would potentially ruin Denver's chance at a monumental upset. Might be the case.

Same reason the Saints should have kept the ball on the quick whistle. Two mistakes were made by the refs in the Det/NO game, only one in the Den/Pitt.
