5.1 speaker systems
The wife and I are moving into our first home soon and I'm doing my research for the speaker system I will install. I have a good Onkyo receiver. It's nothing top of the line but the quality is there. My speakers are from a 12 year old out of the box Sony system. They have hung in there for a while, but leave some to be desired in terms of clarity and focus.
I am looking at the following two systems and would like comments and opinions.
Klipsch HD Theater 1000
Energy - Take Classic 5.1
Both can be had for around $400 and have excellent reviews and comments.

Both of those are nice systems. You will be happy with either one.
I think this Mirage set up would sound just as good also and is only $299
right now here:
Mirage Nanosat 5.1 Home Theater System with Omni S-8 Subwoofer for $299.99 after applying coupon code 4195688 in cart.
Mirage Nanosat 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System at World Wide Stereo
IMHO, If $400 was all I wanted to spend, I would get the Mirage and put the $100 extra toward a couple of towers for the front later. Especially if you like just listening to 2 channel music.
Like these - Mirage OS3-FS Omnipolar Tower Floorstanding Speaker - Black at World Wide Stereo
They are $260 each right now using promo code OSTHREE
Last but not least, These Mirage have a great WAF - Wife Acceptance Factor!

WAF is actually the greatest concern here. I'm already compromising. Hah! There's no way she'd let me put tower speakers in the living room. One concern I do have is that this is going into a fairly large room. There was a deal on the Klipsch HD 500 system for $279 over the weekend. I passed because I was concerned about it not keeping up with a large space.

See if you can sweet talk the Wife into this set up for $350. This is an amazing deal! Jamo is owned by Klipsch.
You will be glad you got something this size since you are trying to fill a large room. Also, I would try to run it a 1st just using the 8" woofers built into the towers. They are not powered, but may work fine instead of having a separate powered subwoofer.

I have a question guys. IM trying to get a 7.1 surround sound system for my media room. Is there a big difference in sound quality in a 2 way channel speakers vs a 3 way channel speakers? Also, is the sound quality difference if any difference worth the difference in price?

You really should be buying separates instead of HTIB. I made the mistake once and again never will.

What's wrong with buying speakers that were designed to work together? Besides, my wife is simply not going to tolerate large speakers, so I'm not sure what choice I have. I'm confident in the quality of my initial receiver. I just need the speakers now.

OK. My wife is officially nuts. Now she is rethinking her position and may be embracing a modern, technology friendly feel for the living room. These are definitely in play now. How does not having a sub effect 5.1 movies though?

You will want a sub eventually but get some towers before the wife changes her mind.

You could also add this for $90.

Because you will miss out on lots of clarity and detail. I thought I had a good HTiB at first until I upgraded. Watched some of my favorite movies again and I was like hold up wait a second. What the heck was that!?! I had been missing out on numerous sounds and details! It was like I was watching a new movie.
And a subwoofer is a must. My best advice is to really make a max budget and start a thread at the AVS Forum in the speaker section. Have your room dimensions as well calculated. It's quite a possibility that a HTiB will not work well in your room. A subwoofer is a must as well.
And put your foot down with the wife. She is most likely decorating the rest of the house. You should get the say so on what electronics you are getting!

I guess I don't necessarily consider something like the Energy Take Classic to be a HTiB. This isn't a Sony system complete with receiver for $299 out of Walmart. These are speakers alone that will be connected to my Onkyo receiver. It might be semantics, but would you consider this a HTiB?
THX Ultra2 Home Theater System | Klipsch
It comes together in a package designed to work together. That's all I'm saying. I'm buying the entire set of speakers at the same time, so naturally they will come together in a box rather than being mismatched. By no means do I want something that is crap or cute. I want solid sound.
As for putting the foot down with the lady, our office will be painted black and gold and I'm getting a shed along with a 55-65 inch TV. I'm trying not to push my luck.
