Does anyone use Google TV or something similar on their TV?
Seems like technology is giving us all new options. I am still using an old analog TV here in Brazil, but will be moving to the US again soon. Thinking about what I will do for a TV set up. Anyone using mostly internet fed content on their tvs?

I use pretty much only streaming on my TVs. I've got 2 Roku boxes and a home media server and that setup provides pretty much all of the digital entertainment I need.
I am going to have to find a way to watch Saints games live though.... There's a Justin.tv channel for the Roku, so I'm suspecting I'll be able to find the games on it.

You used words I don't even know. Hah.
How is it working out for you? Do you have "channels" or do you watch tv shows on demand? Is it subscription based or free?

Oh geez, sorry...
It works great really. The only thing I don't get is 'new' tv shows or movies (I really haven't found a new tv show worth watching in the last 10 years, but that's just me) and there are something like 350+ channels to choose from. Most of them are free, but there are paid channels as well. Netflix, Amazon video, Hulu Plus, etc.
Any series or movies that I can't find on their built in channels, I can acquire on my own and play them through my Plex media server.
Like I said though, there's currently no way to get live nfl games on it unless you find a way to stream them yourself. I 'might' be able to do it with the Verizon NFL package, and share them from my Android phone to the Juice channel on the Roku..... I'll have to wait until there are actual games going on to know for sure...

Thank you for the reply. Basically, I am looking at setting myself up for local channels via antenna (in Baton Rouge) and some kind of internet streaming box for cartoons, older tv series, etc.
I've been told that some networks let you watch their current season's shows online, ABC, etc... can you do those through the box and watch them at your leisure instead of having to be infront of the tv at 8:00pm for example?
Ps, are there any digital recorder boxes that work without subscription TV and just picking up what comes over the airwaves?

Regarding cartoons, older tv shows, etc. the Roku has all of that kinda thing and much more. I know there are others (Apple TV, Western Digital Live boxes, etc) but I'm not familiar with them so can't answer reliably.
I also have heard of the shows that networks stream online but haven't ever looked into them. I don't think they have channels on the Roku system to do that though. I also don't believe they stream 'tonight's show' tonight, either. I think you get last week's and before.
On the other side of the coin, I run a Plex media server on my PC, and it streams saved content from the PC to the Roku box and also has it's own 'channels' that feed internet based videos to the Roku. (YouTube, Wimp.com and many others.) I'm not aware of any that stream from the network sites but I guess it has to be possible....

Cool. You gave me some really useful info. I am sure I'll be able to set something up that will be good for us. We are going to be on a budget, and pay TV will not be one of the things we in it, at least for a long while. This seems like a good alternative.

I hear ya.. There are alternatives so please look into all of them. It's just my experience that the Roku has everything I need from TV based entertainment with the exception of live professional football.

I have had a WD Live TV (plays every kind of media codec from USB port) and has the basics (Netflix, amazon, Hulu etc).
Had apple TV. Has the basics and only plays a few codecs.
Have Roku XS. Has dozens and dozens and dozens of channels compared to the other 2 and plays a decent number of codecs.
Roku is the best of the 3 honestly. Gets what the others get and waaaaaay more.

I've been dying to dump my monthly cable bill in favor of faster internet and streaming TV shows, but that's mostly because my wife still watches new TV programs. I hate hate hate spending $1200/yr just for that when Netflix has been really good about making recent TV shows available just a season or so behind...and I can also pretty much get any other TV show through other means...I haven't been too impressed with HULU though. Is anyone here happy with HULU?

Does anyone have or use a TIVO-like digital recorder for TV that comes over antenna?

Just signed up for Hulu last month. Been on Netflix for years. Hulu is awful compared to Netflix.

Hulu is terrible. It has nothing that the networks don't have on their websites already or that is available in better quality on netflix.

whodatfever just told me that he was wrong about Roku and WD Live. Those Codecs are only for people who want to steal intellectual property and he refuses to support that practice. (I never knew he was so uptight.)
Anyway, he is now highly recommending Apple TV as the most elegant technology on the market.
