XML Feed of NFL Stats?

So, I was toying with the idea of coding my own fantasy football app, one that is tailored more towards what I want in a fantasy game. However, NFL data is ridiculously hard or expensive to come by.

Does anyone know offhand of a database or XML feed of NFL stats, either of this season, or previous ones?

Previous ones would be fine, as I could at least use those to build the app and test it.

I've looked into a few ones, like Stats, Inc, and SportsTicker, and like I mentioned before: ridiculously expensive.

Why cant they just release their data for free?

could you use a custom query string at www.nfl.com/stats/players to get the info you want?
think it would take some scripting or contacting them to get it into an xml.
for what it is worth, there is a connection string available to use an html table as a datasource.

Yeah, thats pretty much the only route I saw being able to take, outside of paying $300/month. And I'm sure if I was just using the data for my own personal use, the NFL wouldnt be too upset about scraping their data... but technically I dont have the legal right to use their data, which they purchase from Stats, Inc. Oh well. I was just wondering. Thanks for the answer!
