Brad Pitt's Mom
no this isn't a 'hot mom' thread (although i'm sure Mrs. Pitt was quite a looker in her day).. she wrote an op ed for her local paper in which she decried 'Barack Hussein Obama' and called Mitt Romney “a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality.”
of course now she's getting death threats, which i've never understood because, no matter what your cause or belief, it makes you look a thousand times worse if you make death threats against someone.. like when Christians threaten to bomb abortion clinics, don't they realize it makes them look petty? I don't get it.

Good for her for speaking her mind regardless what Hollywood, or anyone else for that matter, thinks. She's entitled to voice her opinions just like anyone else.

I have mixed feelings. I can't fault a gay person from having a passionate opinion about their own rights. She brought into play a book, and a way of thinking, that condemns a whole cross section of people. You want to publicly announce you're a bigot, expect a less then savory response.
On the other side, we are a passionate country, but it could be toned down some. The polarization of both sides, and the lack of conversation, or deep inspection of issues that comes from an exchange of ideas is troubling.

Toned down some? That might be appropriate if her detractors called her a bigot or some other name, but they threatened to kill her.
There is no excuse for that.
Just as there is no excuse for an abortion clinic bombing. We should be better than that.

Threatening an abortion clinic bombing you mean. Those are not equals, and not the same. In the realm of politics its par for the course really. It happens, it's not new. People say some crazy stuff. It happened after the healthcare vote. It will happen again. That is reality. I gave my thoughts on should it happen earlier. My point is she isn't a victim. She put herself out there like that. You can expect it to happen.

Agreed.
Same problem I have with all of the wishing of harm and death that some Tea Party supporters have been accused of along the way.
Our political climate is too frequently, it seems, punctuated by extreme and violent rhetoric. Decent people should want better.
As this relates to Mrs. Pitt, I followed the above link back to the WND source and that author cites theatening and vulgar Twitter comments that were highlighted by Twitchy. Anybody know if police are investigating any credible and immediate threats to her safety?

She's a bigot, but she has a right to express her opinion without fear. I hope they prosecute anyone that crosses that line on either side.

I say you take the threats serious, and teach people a lesson by having them spend time with Bubba in prison.
I am all for her using her free speech and receiving the same reprocussions as her son or George Clooney (who share the opposite view).

Reality it may be, but we don't have to condone it, accept it or even expect it. Anonymous death threats are nothing more than cowardice personified and no matter what idiotic tripe comes from a person's mouth, there's no reason to threaten to kill them. More importantly, disagreeing with someone's viewpoints can be done more effectively with words and logic than threats that provide sympathy to an otherwise useless and pitiful opinion.

I agree with this for the most part. We live in a very passionate country. People receive death threats for all types of things even outside of politics. Is it right? Obviously not, but if I was in the public eye, and made a statement like that I would expect backlash. I can only guess that she doesn't realize how harmful her opinion is towards homosexuals.
You talk about open discussion on this, but there isn't. Why? Because its a religious belief, and almost all people don't move on that subject. It's a huge part of the problem with the Republican party these days.

You would expect death threats? How would you handle that?

There is literally no public figure with an opinion that doesn't get death threats on the internet. Trying to stop them would be like trying to stop falcons fans from wearing Michael Vick jerseys. Yeah, they're idiots. But it's pointless to let it bother you. They'll always be there, at least a few.

Anyone has the right to say whatever they want, you just have to accept the consequences. She is only even talked about because her liberal son is super famoush. She hasn't done anything to have anyone care what she has to say.
If you use a soap box because your son is famous, and you say things that upset a large amount of people, you have to expect a negative response. If a celebrity came forward and said to vote for someone who's anti-celebrity I would be understandibly upset. If I were a stupid 16yo I would probably say some very stupid things against that person.
I wonder if it was Brad Pitt saying how terrible Romney is you'd be saying "Good for him for speaking his mind regardless what Fox News, or anyone else for that matter, thinks. He's entitled to voice his opinions just like anyone else."
I'd guess not.

What threats? Anyone read any of the threats? Post a youtube video of yourself playing a maroon 5 song on guitar and you'll get far worse comments.
This woman used her son's celebrity status to speak out against an orientation of people and vote for someone that would inact laws against them being married. The comments against her were idiotic, but what do you expect? it's the wild west out there. Nobody send anything to her home. Nobody has attacked her physically. There's nothing to go with to charge anyone.
It's not against the law to be a bigot, and I'm glad that people are voicing their anger against her so that she can see what other people think of her opinions.
